This mixtape comes from an emcee hailing from Hopewell, Virginia who now resides in Tacoma, Washington. I found him when I ran across his video, “She Ain’t A Stripper.” Before watching the video, I thought it would be like all the other “twerk” songs out there, but when I pressed play I was instantly impressed to see that RedHead is not like your average emcee. He is very versatile and is less traditional in his approach to reaching his audience. “She Ain’t A Stripper” is just one of the 16 songs on I’m Here Now. His song “Last Hope” describes how he is striving to put his city, Hopewell, on the map. He catches attention with clever but meaningful lines like “I guess I’m the last hope for Hopewell, It’s a cold world but they not checking for coattails.” My favorite song on this tape is titled “Beats By Dre,” and it describes how he ignores his haters and naysayers the same way Beat By Dre headphones cancel outside noise when you wear them. Rich P – The Fast Life: Enterstate (Bandcamp)
This next mixtape comes from local emcee, and Broad Street Elite’s own, Rich P. He takes us on the start of his journey with The Fast Life: Enterstate, taking the wheel to show us the road he’s traveled in his life, and the women, money, and extra-curricular activities that he has seen and been through. “Heaven’s Gates” is one of the songs that will make Rich P a face to know in RVA. It has lyrics with a very deep meaning, and a deep dark beat with 808s and a catchy, familiar chorus, stating “If I should die before I wake…” Rich P has frequents and has performed at Kingdom night club, and he has the potential to be one of the best in his lane of Hip Hop in RVA. I also enjoyed “Like You,” in which he switches his style up and speaks on real experiences, showing you some of the facts of his life. Then he brings us back to the streets with “Purple Things,” which talks about his life hustling. I really enjoyed listening to his mixtape and look forward to the continuance of the series he’s bringing us–or driving us down. Keep an eye out for Rich P and Broad Street Elite, as they show us what they are about in RVA.
