He might be young and fresh on the scene, but I don’t think Chris Scholar aka Scholar is one to sleep on.

He might be young and fresh on the scene, but I don’t think Chris Scholar aka Scholar is one to sleep on.

He’s a local hip hop/r&b artist who just released a video for the first track off his debut EP entitled Director’s Cut via his label Mars on Sunday.

The new video, “Abstract,” is straight up dope. It’s simple, yet packs a powerful message. It’s just him alone in a room and what’s refreshing and different is he doesn’t make it all about him, like many artists today. For most of the video his head is covered with a box or replaced with a question mark.

“Abstract” captures the beauty in our differences. “Abstract is a celebration… it’s an ode to being unique,” Scholar told Complex Magazine in a recent interview.

Throughout the video, clips of images of Obama, to police brutality and riots in the streets, to fast cars and an image of Ray Charles stream behind him all sending us a message that we can’t be blind to what’s going on around us.

Scholar beckons us to get out of our comfort zone and if you weren’t getting the message by the imagery and what he was singing, he holds up a “Think Outside the Box” ball near the end to get his message into your mind.

He leaves us with a trumpet outro as he dances through the end of the song and leaves us contemplating everything we just saw.

Stay tuned because you will definitely be hearing more on Scholar from us when his EP drops!
