SATURDAY: Soulpower Pays Tribute To Curtis Mayfield At Balliceaux

by | Aug 15, 2012 | MUSIC

Curtis Mayfield, who would have turned 70 this summer, is one of Soul music’s most influential figures. As the lead vocalist for the Impressions, he turned the group into Chicago’s premiere Soul group. As a solo artist, he wrote the daily soundtrack for Black America with hits like “Superfly” and “Freddie’s Dead.”

Curtis Mayfield, who would have turned 70 this summer, is one of Soul music’s most influential figures. As the lead vocalist for the Impressions, he turned the group into Chicago’s premiere Soul group. As a solo artist, he wrote the daily soundtrack for Black America with hits like “Superfly” and “Freddie’s Dead.” Soul music fans also know that Mayfield was responsible for dozens of hits for other artists, including Major Lance, Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler, The Five Stairsteps, the Staple Singers, Linda Clifford and many more.

For Soulpower hosts Mr. Felty and DJ Pari, these are good enough reasons to dedicate an entire Soulpower night to the man and his legacy. Come dance to records on Mayfield’s own labels Curtom, Windy C and Thomas Records as well as releases by other hit factories of Chicago Soul, including Twinight, Vee-Jay and Chess.

DJ Pari, a die-hard Mayfield fan and collector, is the tour DJ and part of the management team of the Impressions. He has recently opened up at the sold-out Curtis Mayfield Tribute at the Lincoln Center Festival in New York City, which featured not only the Impressions, but Mavis Staples, William Bell, the Roots, Bilal and others. The show was attended by Curtis Mayfield’s widow and children. We hope to give you a little taste of the Mayfield legacy at tonight’s party.

We’ll also play some Curtis Mayfield footage and the movie “Superfly” on our video beamer. As always, there is no cover charge!
