Tegan and Sara didn’t let a little Virginia snow stop them from their Heartthrob debut in Richmond last night. Sporting matching black motorcycle jackets and opposite hair parts, the Canadian-born, twin-lesbian-musicians opened their 2013 tour to a packed house at The National.

With their recent, first career entry on Billboard’s Alternative Chart, they highlighted a number of new songs from their seventh studio album, Heartthrob. From “I Was a Fool” to the catchy, electro-infused single “Closer,” this talent duo performed a welcoming mixture of their new, 80’s-inspired sound and obvious old fan faves, including “Where Does the Good Go?” and “Back in Your Head.”

The two hour show featured limited dialogue from the identical musicians, aside from Sara calling out the inconsiderate behavior of a certain attendee in the balcony, who had thrown his beer bottle down on the crowd below. With cheers of encouragement from the audience, she proceeded to apologize to “all the girls that now have to walk around with poop-beer hair.”

The crowd, full of both fresh-faced and die-hard (yes, there were some tears) fans, prompted a three-song encore with its overwhelming amount of energy and ovation. Side note- if you’re ever looking to meet with some cute, stylish lesbians (along with any other members of the LGBT community)- head immediately to your nearest Tegan and Sara concert. They’ll be hanging out and making out by the dozens.

I left pleased, thinking these two killed it after their four-year hiatus from the stage. Judging from the exiting crowd’s commentary, every genre of Tegan and Sara fan seemed to feel the same. I only wanted to know two more opinions, which were answered by a tweet from @teganandsara later that evening.

“Richmond you were beautiful tonight. Thank you for making our first night back and our first time playing Heartthrob special. Truly.” – @teganandsara

In 2005, I created RVA Magazine, and I'm still at the helm as its publisher. From day one, it’s been about pushing the “RVA” identity, celebrating the raw creativity and grit of this city. Along the way, we’ve hosted events, published stacks of issues, and, most importantly, connected with a hell of a lot of remarkable people who make this place what it is.
