Having recently returned to Washington DC, I couldn’t have asked for a better time to come back to the city that raised me. For the first time, DC was getting something that its been needing for a long time; a festival that combines two different genres that people love, hip hop and EDM.

Having recently returned to Washington DC, I couldn’t have asked for a better time to come back to the city that raised me. For the first time, DC was getting something that its been needing for a long time; a festival that combines two different genres that people love, hip hop and EDM. Thanks to the people at DC to BC, we were graced with two stages featuring a great lineup of up-and-coming artists who have either been taking over as of late or are going to in the future.
Things got started a little bit later than was originally scheduled, but that did not stop the people from enjoying this groundbreaking event. The first group that stood out to me was Brooklyn rappers Flatbush Zombies, who in my opinion lit up the whole event as they passed around joint after joint while delivering a set that got the crowd fired up. Although they were one of the groups whose set time was cut short, they left their stamp on the crowd’s memory of the day, delivering a gift by bringing out ASAP Ant of the ASAP Mob, and laying down their banger “3flips6.”
This event would have not been complete without having DC rapper Tabi Bonney there representing for his home city. As always, Tabi laid down various hits from his body of work. If you were not familiar with the DC sound, his set gave you something that you will not forget. Los Angeles was definitely in the house as Casey Veggies hit the stage with his Peas and Carrots crew by his side. Casey’s midday performance was perfect; just what the crowd needed to keep the good vibes going.
When I wasn’t near the main stage, I found myself in front of the Redbull Music Academy truck, which featured most of the electronic music. DC’s own Tittsworth laid down an hour-long set that had the whole fairgrounds bouncing to electro tracks. Brooklyn’s Brenmar followed up by being the perfect example of what Trillectro was all about, spinning tracks from the two genres that brought us there. Before I realized it, things were coming to an end, as only three more performers were left. One was headliner Schoolboy Q. The rainy weather during his performance did not stop us from rocking out to his tunes. The gangster/designer brought his most recent album to life, and painted a picture that I’m sure satisfied everyone. Before the other headliner, Flosstradamus, came on, DJ Wonder kept the flame going and got us ready.
Finally the moment that we had all been waiting for was here–Flosstradamus took the stage. But things were rough at first, as the sound was low and it was hard for the crowd to get into it. After Flosstradamus made multiple requests for the sound guys to “turn that shit up,” things finally got trill. Sadly, just when the crowd seemed to really start to feel it, they cut the duo’s set short due to noise violations. Needless to say, this was a disappointing end to the day’s events.
We all know that things can’t always go perfectly, but overall the DC to BC crew did a phenomenal job making sure everything went as smoothly as possible. With the success they had, I cannot wait to see what they have in store next year.
