One of my favorite events to hit Richmond in recent years has been the Silent Music Revival. In it’s essence, the Richmond music community discovers a way to celebrate its art as well as embracing the legacy of cinema’s past. This Friday will see a new incarnation of this idea when the VMFA hosts Silent Night. In a year that has shown great expansion for the art museum, it’s exciting to see the development of events such as this.

For the event’s debut, the classical/rock-hybrid pop of Goldrush will act as the soundtrack for the 1925 silent film Battleship Potemkin. During it’s sixty-nine minute running time, the film focuses on the dire conditions of a battleship during the early twentieth century, culminating in mutiny. The story unfolds in a way that speaks several truths for contemporary society. In light of the fact that they were one of many acts to take part in a prior Silent Music Revival, Goldrush are no strangers to this format of performance. It’s fitting that they could provide the anthems and rallying cries for a timeless tale of revolt.
