Chandler, Lex Bratcher, Billy Marchiafava, O-Z

The Broadberry

Chandler’s back home for one night only! Originally from Newport News, Chandler came to Richmond and established himself as an integral part of a few different scenes before finding himself in hip-hop. Since then, he has seen massive success and massively good reactions.

This year saw him move to NYC, a sad but understandable day for Richmond music fans. But hope is not lost, as he is back with some of the finest at The Broadberry. His send-off earlier in the year was legendary, and I think the return will be even crazier.

Lex Bratcher, who has collaborated with Chandler in the past, is supporting. She’s got an insanely clean delivery and flow. Her sound is effortlessly cool and tough makes me feel fucking invincible.

Billy Marchiafava, Chicago-based, is bringing the party. His beats are fun and bouncy (personal favorite is “Indie Pop Type Beat”). There’s so much light in his style.

O-Z is the local representative. He has also previously worked with Chandler, contrasting Chandler’s lighthearted style with a serious and intense delivery. His voice cuts right to the bone and keeps going. I absolutely adore that intensity.

Alaska’s Angels, Marshall Family Values, Dropheads, Parsley

Banditos

Maryland’s Alaska’s Angels are coming down to Bandito’s this week. They put out a really fun EP earlier this year that’s full of anthemic and catchy emo/alternative tunes. I love seeing all sorts of influences, there are some Cure-inspired tracks, some Cake, and a handful of others that come together in a passionate and moving sound. The guitar work is fascinating and really engaging. Overall, a great listening experience from Alaska’s Angels.

This bill caught my attention because of the amazing Marshall Family Values. Their 2024 album, Chateau De Marshall, is one of the most complete pieces of work to come out of this city. This band has the rare ability to create whole worlds. They set a scene you can get lost in, and I think that is one of the most significant things a group can do. If you have never seen them, please go and step into the universe they create.

Locals Dropheads just released a new single, and it gets you feeling all sorts of ways. This group has been on a hot streak of releases, and Best Girl is keeping it going. Their surfy, Southern rock sound is infectious, you’ll have it on repeat.

Parsley is opening things up with their smooth indie rock. This sound has a special place in my heart. I was learning to drive with bands like Summer Salt and The Slaps, and this hits right at home.

After a little more than a year of releases, we’re finally getting a full Sweet Touch album! This pop duo is always pulsing with energy, a swirl of sweetness. They dropped Pink Cloud on Monday, a dreamy, beautiful landscape. They balance fun dance music with sincere serenade, which is no easy feat. I’m definitely looking forward to what this album has to offer.

In support is a really cool local group that hasn’t played a show since before the summer and that’s a crime. False Nectar is one of the most interesting groups I’ve had the chance to interview. They’re complex musically and lyrically, and deliver a true wall-of-sound experience.

Painted World is an artsy indie-rock group that channels sounds from the late Beatles to Talking Heads to Sheer Mag. I haven’t had the chance to see them yet, but I’ve heard nothing but good things. Hopefully they’ll release something soon that we can take home!

New Tunes

Watch It Burn by Astrovirgin
Watch It Burn is the debut track from Astrovirgin, a new solo act founded by an experienced soldier in the local music world. This track balances conventional electronic instrumentation with a grounding piano. The song crescendos into a colorful, cinematic scene. The leading synth closes it out with a super-catchy whistle that’ll stay in your head for days.

VS5 by Miracle Time
Just under a year since Miracle Time’s debut album, we now have VS5, their new EP. A bright and wild cover greets you as you dive into a contrastingly noisy yet soft opening track. The whole EP is fantastic, offering a full spectrum of emotion and intensity. My favorite track is Junkmail, which leans into the indie and jazzy side of their sound. Overall, VS5 paints a really beautiful picture.
