Sound Check! Charlie Glenn, Devin The Dude & Being Dead

by | Oct 9, 2024 | MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE

It’s getting chilly, let’s get at it. We got a really good selection of classics and new releases. It seems like everyone in the city is putting out music right now, all part of the Richmond Renaissance. Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.

Charlie Glenn Solo, Deau Eyes

Once a proud rocker in the legendary local Palm Palm, Charlie Glenn is putting out a solo album and is going to be partying at the Camel to celebrate. It is everything you would hope to find in a modern glam rocker. There are songs that have a fantastic and gentle romance to them, and others that are a rocketship powered directly by a trip guitar. There is something incredibly honest and endearing in the vocals, a slight strain that reveals a vast pool of real emotion.

Deau Eyes is the only revealed support (special guests are expected) performing a solo set. I recently caught the Deau Eyes Plan 9 in store event hosted by The Auricular and was absolutely blown away. It is some of the best songwriting I have ever heard. I do not know if the local singer has always been local, but there is an incredibly Virginian feel in the sound. Solo performances sometimes struggle to claim the word “captivating” but Deau Eyes did it with absolute ease.

Devin The Dude, King Kaiju, Boobie Holiday, Ty Sorrell, CJ the Profit, Ducttape Jesus and Hip Hop Henry

Devin The Dude was there from the beginning. An OG in the 90’s hip hop scene, he has included all the big names, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Nas, in his chill west coast inspired sound. He delivers vocals that make you feel like you are right in the studio with him as he attaches himself in front of the mic, lyric sheets littering the space around his feet.

He is being supported by some of Richmond’s finest. This is a healthy collection of our more mellow rappers, but from what I have seen, the shows are still intense and personal, in your face as much as your ears.

Being Dead, Bone Machine, Tentative Decisions

I love a good dual vocal. Being Dead is a whole lotta fun, you can hear how much they are enjoying themselves. The simple drum patterns correspond well with some easy to get along with guitars while the bass gives you something to dance to. During my initial listen I thought they sounded a lot like Oh Ok, and that whole 80’s Athens GA sound.

Bone Machine is one of the catchiest local groups. They have a somewhat psychedelic feel but it never leaves the stratosphere, it’s a very real sound, exploring the tunnels and corridors that reside under the street. Tentative Decisions are still feeling the excitement of their newest single, Jawbreaker, which picks up their tempo a little bit, and exemplifies their chaotic but tight attitude.

New Tunes

Bad Habits by Jo Malicotte, Patrick Rush

This is a beautiful and gentle tale told as the first release by local Jo Malicotte. In the song, the content guitar dances carelessly with the cello of Patrick Rush. It reads as if the vocals are standing on a balcony, smiling, as the instruments develop and blossom together.

Song for Thomas Merton by Twin Films

The newest chapter in the ever interesting saga of Twin Films, Song for Thomas Merton is an upbeat and poppy tale of a much less fun story. It details the titular monk mourning his brother’s death. This is one thing I really appreciate about Twin Films, they always keep you on your toes.
