Golden Fest | A Benefit For Justin Golden w/ The Trillions, Jake The Dog, Charm Offensive, Mead The Dear, Andrew Alli & Josh Small

I’m sure many Richmond scenesters have heard about the horrible cancer diagnosis of local legend Justin Golden, and the city is showing up to get this king what he needs. (If you really can’t make it out, you can donate to his GoFundMe HERE.)

Some of Richmond’s best will be at The Camel, making noise for an undeniably good cause. Benefit shows are always the best, and this one is going to be a party.

Not too long ago, I had a family member in a brutal fight with cancer, and I know that seeing a community rally to the call is an incredibly powerful force.

Nysa (fka Shid), Artschool, Ultra Bleach, This Man May Die

Nysa, formerly known as SHID, delivered one of the greatest performances I have ever seen last November at The Camel. At different points throughout the show, the singer was on stage, in the crowd, on the crowd, at the bar, and outside—all while screaming and howling into the mic.

The Philly band clearly comes from a deep love of The Stooges and Nirvana, with a psychedelic twinge that makes it all feel like some drug-induced dream. This mob is generational, and you don’t want to be lost in the gap.

In direct support is my own band, Artschool. What we lack in musical ability, we make up for in circus tricks and vague threats to people in power—riding that European wave of Fontaines D.C., Shame, and Idles.

I first saw Ultra Bleach between the sweaty walls of a DIY spot, pouring their ever-loving hearts into a bouncy, danceable punk performance. As soon as they whipped out the Devo cover, I was sold. They’ve been steadily climbing the ranks of my favorite local performers.

This Man May Die is a killer in the college rock scene. They are pure party energy, with catchy tunes you’ll be humming on the drive home. Always happy to see their name on a bill.

Let’s show Mengers a good time—they’re coming all the way from Mexico. They’re crunchy and crazy, with drums like speedballs. Packed and chalked with feedback and distortion, but not in an overwhelming way—there’s still plenty of melody to bounce to. I haven’t been this excited for an out-of-town band in a while. These guys are it, plain and simple.

Waah (short for We Are All Human) is a noisy NYC band with a perfect balance of heavy drone and snappy drums. The vocals sound like they’re coming out of a smoky, fog-filled woodline, beckoning you toward a new life—nothing but unbridled, beautifully heavy atmosphere.

Rat Fight is the ammunition I’m firing to fight back against the unending fascist horde descending into the valley of the free world. Seriously, if you’ve never seen them, you’ll be blown away. I think these guys could go toe-to-toe with big names like Militarie Gun and come out with little more than bruised knuckles.

Wine and Warpaint is bringing a wall of melodic punk. Their sound is definitely influenced by the greats of the early 2000s and 2010s scene—think Jimmy Eat World and Four Year Strong.

NEW TUNES

Spanish Moss” by Cleophus James

Spanish Moss” is out! It’s a bouncy, lively tune with some incredible guitar work—almost like the Southern cousin of locals’ Tentative Decisions.

This is the kind of song that burrows into your brain and spins around nonstop until, eventually, you’ve got a whole party between your ears.

Zoomies” by Hardcount

Hardcount with the debut! Oh, to be a teenager in 1960, smoking cigarettes and fighting the system with greased-up hair—that’s exactly how the intro got me feeling. Then, it dives headfirst into a fast California frenzy.

This is quite the anthem for a first release, and I’m officially on the Hardcount train. This is a bop—you’re bouncing up and down with the biggest smile on your face.

Threaded Distortion: Quicksand at Richmond Music Hall

Quicksand is more than just a compelling band; they're a persuasively compelling band, still honing their craft 35 years into their tenure as one of the great post-hardcore bands of the 1990s. Their relentless sound and gritty honesty has carved out a permanent spot...

VHS Club | Escape from New York

Opinion | Richmond, We Don’t Need Another Love Song

Music has always been a mirror. It tells us who we are, what we value, and, sometimes, what we’re too afraid to face. But if music is supposed to reflect the world around us, then what does it say that so much of today’s mainstream music says… nothing at all? Richmond...
