Gusher, T.U.F.T., Sad Roach, Ultra Bleach

I’ve wanted to see Gusher for a hot minute now. The self-proclaimed “art punk for hot sluts” band is broadly what’s going right for modern punk. It’s stripped back, but keeps some of the gloss and polish that came with new wave. The lyrics are aggressive and almost brutishly honest, which I respect—strip the subtlety away.

Co-headlining the tour with Gusher is T.U.F.T. out of St. Louis. They have a bit more of an edge hewn into them. There’s an ’80s D.C. hardcore feel there, but with more groove than, say, the New Yorkers.

Sad Roach has been on my radar for a while. These D.C.-ites are chaotic, lo-fi, and loud. I’ve heard good things about their live show, and I’m excited to confirm that down the block rather than two hours away.

My newest obsession is Ultra Bleach. This is pure, raw punk that is so goddamn entertaining. My words can’t do it justice—go see Ultra Bleach.

Homey, Truck Bed, Receiver

Homey has some of the best ambiance and atmosphere this side of the Atlantic. They reach into moody and mysterious territory, and I think they’ve got a great future. I’m really excited for their upcoming releases. So far, I believe they’re just on Bandcamp, but damn—those Bandcamp recordings are worth a listen.

Truck Bed saw some instant success with their single “Puzzles,” and just followed it up with “Restless Hearts (Empty Streets),” which is equally captivating. I feel like their genre of “dreamy emo” is really having a cultural moment.

Opening is Receiver. These guys are relatively new but have been getting an amazing reception so far. They’ve got a bit of a college rock sound, and I think it’s desperately appreciated.

The Hurricane Party, Portico

The Hurricane Party is a local, bluesy outfit that knows how to set a mood. Their sound leans into a slow-burn groove—equal parts lounge and honky-tonk—with smoky vocals and just enough grit to keep things unpredictable. It’s the kind of music that makes you want to sip something strong and sway a little. They don’t rush, and that patience creates a kind of simmering tension in their set. It’s not background music, it’s atmosphere-building.

Joining them is Portico, bringing a breezier, rootsy Americana vibe. They strike a nice balance between polished and heartfelt, with melodies that wander but always land somewhere warm. Expect some layered harmonies, a few toe-tappers, and maybe even a moment or two that gets the whole room leaning in a little closer.

NEW TUNES

Spanish Moss” by Cleophus James

Spanish Moss” is out! It’s a bouncy, lively tune with some incredible guitar work—almost like the Southern cousin of locals’ Tentative Decisions.

This is the kind of song that burrows into your brain and spins around nonstop until, eventually, you’ve got a whole party between your ears.

Zoomies” by Hardcount

Hardcount with the debut! Oh, to be a teenager in 1960, smoking cigarettes and fighting the system with greased-up hair—that’s exactly how the intro got me feeling. Then, it dives headfirst into a fast California frenzy.

This is quite the anthem for a first release, and I’m officially on the Hardcount train. This is a bop—you’re bouncing up and down with the biggest smile on your face.
