Sound Check! Superchunk, Night Idea, Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, White Beast & More!

by | Sep 3, 2025 | DOWNTOWN RVA, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE, QUEER RVA

Got a couple icons of the American alternative scene in town, which pairs well with some local killers in the same realm. Some chill, some not, some right in the middle. Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.

Superchunk, Cor De Lux
Friday, September 5th
Richmond Music Hall

Superchunk has been a hallmark of the American indie scene for decades. First starting in 1989, the band has produced a number of fantastic albums that have become the blueprint for authentic and sincere college rock. Their sound is reminiscent of their predecessors, R.E.M. and The Replacements, but carries its own distinct introspective character. One of the downsides of ’90s music was the extremes—bands often felt like they had to fully commit and embody a genre. Superchunk was not afraid to dive into different territories, and the result is an ever-growing and diverse discography that cuts right to the heart.

Joining the Supers is fellow North Carolina group Cor De Lux. If Superchunk sounds like a living room full of your closest friends, Cor De Lux is you and your partner in crime flying down a dim highway. They are much more atmospheric and centered around mood. They paint a picture of what surrounds you, and I find it oddly comforting. If you dig Sonic Youth and Fugazi, you’ll dig these guys.

Night Idea, Painted World, Gaffer, Jr.
Saturday, September 6th
The Camel

Night Idea is the dreamiest outfit in town. This group has perfected surreal scenes of blue and yellow that swirl like birds. Since 2014, they’ve been putting out albums that feel rich and full—like woven tapestries of light, sound, and darkness. I normally don’t gravitate toward music with minimal singing, but they use it so precisely that it becomes its own treasure to uncover.

Painted World is like 10,000 Greeks, all seasoned soldiers on the battlefields of Richmond rock. Each member has a résumé long enough to wallpaper The Camel, so you won’t be disappointed. The band debuted in January, and I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about their powerful performance.

Gaffer is a young and sharp trio making noise in the punk and indie spheres. They keep things minimal but in a very calculated and smart way. They’ve got one demo out that’s an absolute joy to listen to, and I’m excited to see what comes next from them.

Jr. is a new-to-me group, an indie-pop duo crafting calming, serene sounds like rolling electronic waves. Listening to Jr. feels like floating in a sweet deprivation tank, carried on all the chill tones.

Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, Fit Check, Paralysis, Discipline
Sunday, September 7th
Cobra Cabana

The legendary Dirty Rotten Imbeciles are coming Richmond’s way. One of the godfathers of crossover thrash, D.R.I. have been melting faces for over 40 years. They remain one of the most important bands in American heavy music, combining hardcore punk with thrash metal to deliver some of the hardest-hitting tunes in history. Expect elbows, knees, and teeth to be flying at this show.

Fit Check describe themselves as “approachable hardcore,” and honestly, that’s spot on. The chants are easy to pick up, and before you know it you’re yelling along. Their songs are short and aggressive, with guitars that cut like razor blades.

Discipline waste no time. The moment you press play, a blitz of drums fills your head like coins in a washing machine. This lot is efficient and brutal in all the best ways, cramming as many chords and snare hits into a second as possible before dropping into a heavy, antagonizing breakdown.

New Tunes

In Heaven (die_hard demo) by White Beast
White Beast has been on a generational run of releases over the past year. Their newest track, “In Heaven (die_hard demo)“, is even more gut-wrenching than anything we’ve heard so far. Covering the iconic song from Eraserhead, vocalist and bassist Jeff Rettberg pours everything in his soul into the repeating line: “In heaven, everything is fine.”

The drums from Margret Gordon are as powerful as ever, inflicting a kind of inspiring wound straight to the heart. Once again, White Beast deliver a stellar performance and an unparalleled force with this track.
