Sound Check | The War and Treaty, Juneteenth and The Camel, Tight Rope, & More!

by | Jun 19, 2025 | DOWNTOWN RVA, MUSIC, NIGHTLIFE

I am glad to say Richmond shows out when need be. Even at the most empty shows there’s two buddies in the corner that came to support. Keep RVA supportive.

Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.

Friday Cheers
The War and Treaty, Mekong Xpress and the Get Fresh Horns and Madeline Edwards
Friday June 20th, 2025
Brown’s Island

Over the last decade, husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty have earned nonstop praise in the worlds of country, western, and roots music. Their voices blend with a force only a powerhouse couple can deliver. Tanya Trotter’s voice is one for the books—soaring over the instrumentals like vivid fireworks. The imagery they conjure is rich, raw, and unmatched.

Mekong Xpress and the Get Fresh Horns are one of Richmond’s grooviest collectives. They’ve bottled all the beauty and funk of the ’70s, strapped it to a rocket, and taken us along for the ride. Smooth and drifty, they make you feel like you’re cruising past stars with the windows down.

Juneteenth featuring Noah Pierre, Akaluther, Trapcry, Lil Stixx, Sound Genesius, Freedom Imani, This Man May Die, Cassidy Snider and the Wranglers

The Camel

In honor of Juneteenth, The Camel is throwing down one of the most stacked local bills of the summer—celebrating the Black artists who continue to shape Richmond’s music scene across every genre.

The lineup features: Noah Pierre, Akaluther, Trapcry, Lil Stixx, Sound Genesius, Freedom Imani, This Man May Die, and Cassidy Snider and the Wranglers

All of Richmond’s top genres are showcased here, hip hop, jazz, blues, punk, (all of which were invented by black artists), etc. This is probably the best bang for your buck bill around so come on out for an endless stream of great tunes.

Tight Rope, Crop Rot, Doss
Sunday June 22nd, 2025
Banditos

I am distraught to have joined the Tight Rope wave only right before their last show. These local post-punkers got an insane reaction from their debut single, “Blood From Saints,” and quickly followed it up with “Crazy Eyes” (my favorite of their tracks). As far as I know, this will be their last show, and I’m certainly sad to see it. Farewell and goodbye to one of the most interesting local acts to come out of the last few years.

Louisville’s Crop Rot is hitting RVA before they head across the Pacific. In my eyes, this type of band is a direct result of Fontaines D.C., Fat White Family, and all of Europe’s current swingers. They capture a really pure and honest intensity that spins the listener into a unique and twisted world.

Speaking of Europe, Doss is Glasgow’s champion at this show. The lyrics are witty and topical but never feel forced. They’ve got an interesting electronic flair, a bit of Kneecap influence, and a snarly punk sneer. I’m really taken by this lot.

New Tunes

Domestic Thought Experiment‘ by Shagg Carpet

I have long since been gambling high amounts on Shagg Carpet, and it looks like I’m cashing out big time. Shagg just released their first single since December, and it shows an insane leap in songwriting. The lyrics keep the sharp and snide outlook of their early releases, but overall it feels like they were willing to risk something new—and it was so worth it.

The greater emphasis on synth allows for some serious world-building, and the post-chorus break and kick-back-in slaps you somewhere between reality and the Shagg Carpet Cinematic Universe.

Murmur’ by Homey

Murmur” is the A-side of the new Homey release, and they’ve nailed a sinister vibe with those feeding guitars. The moment everything crashes into a booming chorus is masterfully executed. They strike a solid balance between noisy shoegaze textures and a heavier, more aggressive attitude by the end.
