David Bowie said it best: “Let’s dance.”
I tried to get something fun, something chill, and something maniacal—because sometimes a man has got to skank, and sometimes a man has got to get a concussion in the pit.
If you’ve got any tips, send them my way. Got a show coming up? New single? Simply want someone to talk music? I am your guy at griffin@rvamag.com.

Weedeater, Bask, Book of Wyrms
Weedeater are as heavy as the weight of self-actualization in the modern age. The chug of their guitars turns the crank in a nightmarish contraption powering eldritch horrors. To me, Weedeater is a real statement of what modern metal is capable of after shedding the expectations of the ’80s. It’s not pretty or flashy—it’s sludgy, gross, dirty, and vile.
Bask has a little more medieval to ‘em. At the same time, they’ve got a little more cowboy. We’re piecing it together. But don’t let these descriptions fool you—underneath the striking vocals is an impressive war machine of distortion.
Book of Wyrms is a Richmond staple. Their spacey sound will remind you of all the greats, and they’re sheer shredders on any instrument put in front of ‘em. I’m not usually one to say it, but they melt.

CS Cleaners, Chest Hair, Dumb Waiter, Clenchers
CS Cleaners is a truly unique art-punk group from Brooklyn. Fans of Shame, Fat White Family, and Tentative Decisions will be all over this. They know how to wring every weird sound possible out of their guitars while yelping into the mic—and I mean that as a compliment. I always want to support these kinds of no-wave bands when they roll through town. It’s always a wild, circus-like experience watching them trapeze across the stages of Gallery 5 or The Camel.
Chest Hair is a local two-piece I haven’t caught live yet, but they’re fascinating. They sound like dropping the needle on a handful of speed pills and cranking the volume all the way up. Clenchers are another freaky and captivating rabbit hole of sound. The guitar has an incredible voice of its own, shifting roles and holding some surprisingly interesting conversations with the bass.
Dumb Waiter is the most avant-garde act on this lineup, bringing an almost punk/metal approach to jazz. They’re wildly dynamic, shifting moods in an instant, with a sound that feels like the chaotic aftermath of a bad dream.

Kill Lincoln, Half Part Two, Omnigone
They can never keep ska down. As soon as you hear those trombones charge down the hill of upstroked guitars, you can’t help but contort your body into a rude skank. Kill Lincoln is incredible fun, and you won’t be able to do anything but hop along to that offbeat. Live a little, ya know?
Half Part Two is another veteran third-wave ska-fit. They are so very energy-filled. It hits home for all that early 2000s pop-punk where they hit that synchronized leg-tuck jump.
Omnigone is more on the punk side of ska-punk than the two previous two. I think they have a little bit more of a Fat Wreck Chords sound, but they still have diversity and get on that chiller, classic third-wave sound.

NEW TUNES
“Spanish Moss” by Cleophus James
“Spanish Moss” is out! It’s a bouncy, lively tune with some incredible guitar work—almost like the Southern cousin of locals’ Tentative Decisions.
This is the kind of song that burrows into your brain and spins around nonstop until, eventually, you’ve got a whole party between your ears.
“Zoomies” by Hardcount
Hardcount with the debut! Oh, to be a teenager in 1960, smoking cigarettes and fighting the system with greased-up hair—that’s exactly how the intro got me feeling. Then, it dives headfirst into a fast California frenzy.
This is quite the anthem for a first release, and I’m officially on the Hardcount train. This is a bop—you’re bouncing up and down with the biggest smile on your face.
