Let’s be honest: most local summer music guides read like they were written by someone who’s never been to a show. A few safe headliners. Maybe a festival or two. So we made our own and put it all in one place for easy reference.
This is RVA Magazine’s unofficial, unfiltered field guide to the music we actually care about this summer. Not everything—across genres, across Virginia, and across stages big and small—but this city moves fast and we couldn’t fit everything in. So consider this a jumping-off point, not a final word.
We’ve highlighted some of our longtime favorites, hometown heroes, rising voices, and a few new spaces making real noise. Check your local venues. Stay curious. Show up early. Tip the bartenders.
Here’s what’s happening this summer, and why you might want to be there.

Richmond Metal Royalty: Lamb of God + GWAR + Hatebreed
Thursday, July 24, 2025
Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront, 350 Tredegar Street, Richmond, VA
This isn’t just a concert—it’s a homecoming, a victory lap, and a full-force celebration of Richmond’s metal legacy.
Two of the city’s most iconic and genre-defining exports—Lamb of God and GWAR—take the stage together for the first time at the new Allianz Amphitheater, joined by hardcore veterans Hatebreed in a lineup that reads like a Hall of Fame induction for heavy music in Virginia.
Formed in the late ’90s, Lamb of God rose from the city’s underground clubs (as Burn the Priest) to become one of the most respected and intense metal bands of the 21st century. Their 2022 album Omens proved they’ve lost none of their edge, delivering politically charged lyrics and brutal precision with global impact—but still grounded in RVA.
GWAR, meanwhile, has taken theatrical metal to outer space since the mid-’80s. Born in a warehouse now known as the Slave Pit, their blood-splattered shows, grotesque costumes, and unfiltered satire have turned them into underground legends with a fiercely loyal cult following. They’re more than music—they’re mythology.
Together, Lamb of God and GWAR represent the full spectrum of Richmond metal: raw, imaginative, punishing, and proud. Add Hatebreed to the bill, and you’ve got the kind of night that will be remembered in Richmond lore—and maybe felt in your neck for a week afterward.

The Head and The Heart – Aperture Tour
Friday, August 1, 2025
Allianz Amphitheater at Riverfront, 350 Tredegar Street, Richmond, VA
The Head and The Heart return to Richmond for a full-circle moment on their Aperture Tour, performing at the brand-new Allianz Amphitheater with the James River as their backdrop.
What many may not realize is this show is a quiet homecoming—founding members Jonathan Russell and drummer Tyler Williams both grew up in Richmond and cut their teeth in its open mic and DIY scenes before heading west to Seattle, where the band officially formed in 2009. That origin story still echoes in their music: warm, vulnerable, and emotionally open.
Their new album Aperture (2025) is a return to those roots—introspective, melody-rich, and full of subtle sonic expansion. While longtime fans will hear classics like “Lost in My Mind,” “Rivers and Roads,” and “All We Ever Knew,” the new material blends seamlessly in, offering reflections on time, change, and rediscovery.
With support from Wilderado and Marfa, this night promises to be one of the summer’s most emotionally charged—and one of the most meaningful for Richmond fans who’ve been following the band since the beginning.

Sunday, August 3, 2025
Brown’s Island, Richmond, VA
Two of indie rock’s most legendary and mind-bending acts—The Flaming Lips and Modest Mouse—join forces for a co-headlining tour that lands in downtown Richmond this summer. Brown’s Island becomes the setting for a night of cosmic fuzz, surreal visuals, and emotional chaos in the best possible way.
The Flaming Lips are known for turning their shows into full-on psychedelic carnivals—bubble machines, confetti storms, giant inflatable creatures, and all. Expect a technicolor dream wrapped around Wayne Coyne’s joyful weirdness.
Modest Mouse brings the existential counterbalance: jagged riffs, Isaac Brock’s howl, and that uncanny ability to make dread sound danceable. Their catalog—spanning from The Lonesome Crowded West to The Golden Casket—hits hard in a live setting, especially when the sun starts to set.
This is one of the biggest and most anticipated shows of the summer. A rare double bill that feels both nostalgic and entirely of the moment.

Richmond Jazz & Music Festival – The Sound of Summer in RVA
August 8–10, 2025 | Saturday-Sunday at Maymont
The Richmond Jazz & Music Festival is back, and as usual, it’s doing the most—in a good way. Three days of jazz, R&B, soul, and hip hop, with a lineup that swings from smoky sax solos to Southern rap royalty, all in the heat of a Virginia summer. It’s powered by Dominion Energy (because of course it is), produced by Richmond’s JMI, and it’s been steadily building its reputation for over a decade now.
This year’s top-billed names give you an idea of where things are headed:
- T.I. – Still Atlanta royalty. Still sharp. Still knows how to work a crowd.
- Jodeci – The slow-jam legends. Loud, unpolished, deeply emotional—just like the ‘90s they helped define.
- Muni Long – Breakout R&B star with real vocal range and songwriting chops. “Hrs & Hrs” is the kind of track that doesn’t leave your head.
- Masego – A genre chameleon with a saxophone and a Virginia backstory (Newport News + ODU). He coined the term “TrapHouseJazz” and somehow made it make sense.
- CeeLo Green – One of music’s strangest and most soulful voices. From Dungeon Family to “Forget You,” he brings the full spectrum.
Also on deck: Aloe Blacc, Marsha Ambrosius, October London, Dru Hill, Raheem DeVaughn, and jazz heavyweights like Kirk Whalum, Mindi Abair, and Norman Brown, alongside Virginia’s own Charles Owens, Alexander Mack, and others.
Expect food trucks. Expect summer heat. Maybe even a little soul on your sleeve. The music will be great—but what really sets RJMF apart is that it still feels rooted in the city that built it.

The Camel, 1621 W Broad St, Richmond, VA

Joining them are Newgrounds DeathRugby, whose chaotic energy and unpredictable structures feel tailor-made for anyone raised on forum culture and weird internet ephemera, and Kerosene Heights, bringing their brand of melodic, emotionally heavy indie punk to round out a night of youthful release.
For fans of Bandcamp rabbit holes, house shows, and yelling in unison with strangers—this one’s for you.

As a longtime community partner, RVA Magazine is proud to support this grassroots-powered, radically inclusive event. Pridefest is proof that Richmond’s creative spirit and queer resilience remain as vibrant as ever.
🎟️ Free and open to the public. Full lineup and schedule coming soon at diversityrichmond.org.

Support RVA Magazine. Support independent media in Richmond.
In a world where corporations and wealthy individuals now shape much of our media landscape, RVA Magazine remains fiercely independent, amplifying the voices of Richmond’s artists, musicians, and community. Since 2005, we’ve been dedicated to authentic, grassroots storytelling that highlights the people and culture shaping our city.
But we can’t do this without you. A small donation, even as little as $2 – one-time or recurring – helps us continue to produce honest, local coverage free from outside interference. Every dollar makes a difference. Your support keeps us going and keeps RVA’s creative spirit alive. Thank you for standing with independent media. DONATE HERE.
