THURSDAY: Tiger And Woods At The Canal Club!

Tiger And Woods are a production duo who have been stirring up some action in the world of dance music recently. Their 2011 EPs, Through The Green and Wiki & Leaks, grabbed a bunch of attention for their disco-funk mixology, leading to their being categorized as “future boogie.” But really, other than their music, almost nothing is known about this enigmatic twosome.

Billing themselves as Larry Tiger and David Woods, the group use false names not only as a way to deflect attention away from their true identities but as a way to namecheck influences. In a rare interview given to the San Francisco Examiner, they admitted to loving Larry David and his show, Curb Your Enthusiasm, but credited the impetus for the name to their love of late 80s/early 90s production duos like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. These sorts of sounds brought the two together, in fact–their initial collaboration was spurred when the two, then strangers, were both in a used record shop looking for funk grooves and got into a bidding war for the anonymous album the proprietor had on the turntable at the time. Eventually the price got so high that they had to combine their funds and purchase the record jointly, which led them to hit the studio together and see what sort of sounds they could extract from said slab of vinyl. Years later, Tiger And Woods are still pulling from old funk and disco albums to create new sounds in the world of electronic dance music, and this Thursday, they’ll be bringing those sounds to RVA with a performance at the Canal Club. They’ll be joined by Party Liberation Front DJ and party-starter extraordinaire Reinhold, who will kick things off in fine fashion. So come on out, sink into Tiger And Woods’ electro-disco grooves, and dance the night away.
