This May Day, The Camel has a great lineup on tap for all you rock n’ rollers, and if you’re feeling strapped because it’s just not quite payday yet, have no fear–you should be able to scrape enough change out of your couch cushions to get in the door at this shindig. Your headliners are Richmond’s power-pop sweethearts, The Trillions, who will be presenting you with a set chock-full of Beatlesque harmonies, Cheap Trick-style bubblegum-crunch riffs, and the kind of intricate, multi-layered guitar leads that get math nerds unreasonably excited. If you’ve been paying any attention at all, you’ve certainly caught these boys around town a time or two, but they’re such a treat live that you should have no objection to seeing them one more (or five more, or ten more) time(s).
Also on the bill are Philadelphia imports The Great White Caps, whose surf-rock revival sound should be a real treat for fans of Man Or Astroman, Dick Dale, and Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet (you know, those guys who did the Kids In The Hall theme song). Touring behind their album Screech Beach!, which was released late last year, The Great White Caps mingle reverbed-out instrumentals with rockabilly-style rave-ups. Some of their songs have vocals, and some don’t, but all of them feature heaping helpings of Duane Eddy-ish guitar twang, and all of them will have you on your feet and dancing. So don’t miss these guys!
Rounding out the bill is Warren Hixson, a group that, despite their name, does not feature anyone named Warren. No, this quintet is led by Brent Delventhal, who arrived in town a year or two ago and wasted no time enlisting respected RVA musicians such as Sports Bar’s Kemper Blair and well-known solo performer Nelly Kate to fill out the latest lineup of his personal brainchild. Last year’s Cruel Whims 10-inch EP was a rockin’ collection of throwback-style psychedelic garage rock, but recent shows by Warren Hixson’s current lineup reveal the band to have already progressed significantly from their relatively recent recordings. The new material adds chunky grunge guitar riffs and a spooky Appalachian noir feel to their previous garage-rock foundation and results in an unusual and thoroughly compelling sonic mix. Nirvana and Creedence jamming with Roky Erickson at the height of his horror movie obsession? Well, it’s somewhere in that ballpark–and that right there should be enough to convince you that you need to see Warren Hixson if you haven’t already (or even if you have). It all happens at The Camel this Wednesday night, and like we said before, the price of admission is very reasonable! So make sure you’re in attendance when it all goes down, and get ready to dance–because once the music starts, you won’t have a choice!
