Taking Back Sunday are pretty much the kings of emo at this point, right? It seems like everyone has gotten through at least one or two adolescent emotional traumas by playing their albums nonstop.
Taking Back Sunday are pretty much the kings of emo at this point, right? It seems like everyone has gotten through at least one or two adolescent emotional traumas by playing their albums nonstop. (I definitely have, and I’m 37 years old.) For that reason, it can be surprising to step back and realize that it’s only been 11 years since their debut LP, Tell All Your Friends, was unleashed upon the world. Taking Back Sunday were little more than adolescents back then themselves, and you could tell–between their lyric war with fellow Long Island emo crew Brand New and the fact that their original lineup splintered due to an ill-advised tour hookup, these were clearly kids still figuring out how to deal with their emotions in a positive manner.

Thankfully, over the past decade, everyone involved has grown up. The two warring factions of the original lineup mended fences and regrouped in 2010, just in time to release their self-titled fifth album. And now, after last year’s celebratory Tell All Your Friends tenth anniversary tour, the reunited classic five lineup has completed their sixth album, scheduled for release next spring, and returned to the road in triumph. If the new material they’ve been previewing live is any indication, they’ve got another excellent helping of emotional, poppy punk on tap for us in 2014. But don’t take my word for it–check out this excellent live performance of “Flicker Fade,” filmed in September at New Jersey’s Starland Ballroom:
You’ll have a chance to see them do this and other new songs, as well as classics like “Cute Without The E,” “One-Eighty By Summer,” and “A Decade Under The Influence” (my personal favorite) when they come to the NorVa next week. They may not flip out quite as much as they used to, but they still bring the goods live, in a big way–and you don’t want to miss it!
