‘Awkward Sex… And The City’ with Comedian Natalie Wall This Weekend at Firehouse Theatre!

by | Feb 13, 2023 | COMEDY, RICHMOND NEWS

Hello reader! I had a blast catching up with the hilarious Natalie Wall this week. This Virginia native is here to tackle the ever-so-popular topic of sex – you know, the good, the bad, and the awkward. And she’s not alone – Natalie’s joined by a gang of fellow comedians to tackle this tricky subject on February 16th at the Firehouse Theatre. We’re gonna chat about her comedy style, the ups and downs of modern dating, and the importance of keeping things steamy in relationships.

Awkward Sex and the City

Would you classify your act as more improvisational or stand-up comedy?
I perform stand-up comedy. My sets are more storytelling-oriented. I present actual stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end that usually run for about 10-15 minutes. I’m terrible at improv but it’s actually what got me to start doing stand-up.

The way you describe it, it sounds like you’re referring to a one-person show that’s more storytelling-based than just telling jokes and delivering punchlines.
Yeah, one-person shows are definitely hot right now. It’s kind of the big thing. I’m even considering doing one myself, as it’s already what I do, just on a larger scale.

And it’s not too far off from stand-up either. They’re definitely in high demand.
No, not at all. If you’re ever in Richmond, or if she comes to DC, you should check out Jacklyn Novak‘s one-woman show, Get on Your Knees. I’ve seen it three times now, and it’s brilliant. It’s all about her relationship with blowjobs and it’s one of the funniest and smartest things I’ve ever seen in my life. It inspired me to be a better comedian.

Tell me more about your upcoming show Awkward Sex and the City.
Sure thing! It’s a show where myself and three other comedians share our most awkward dating and relationship stories. The audience is always guaranteed to feel better about their own dating experiences after watching, because it didn’t happen to them!

What do you think are the biggest changes in dating now compared to ten years ago?
I can’t give you the latest dating scoop, since I’ve been married to my husband for eight years now. But I do host a podcast where people come and chat about the dating scene, and what I’ve noticed lately is that after 2020, a lot of people were like “Okay, let me use this time to better myself and work on what needs work.” But then, as 2023 rolled around, it seems like people didn’t follow through with that self-improvement and are still making some questionable choices that are hurting others. There’s a lot of ghosting and unrequited love happening, and a lot of overpromising and under-delivering. People who did work on themselves are now more likely to say “I know I deserve better and I’m not going to put up with that crap.”

I think awkward sex is associated with being single a lot, but it can carry on into a relationship/marriage. You got to keep it alive.
Honestly, I think that’s a big part of it. People don’t like to talk about that. You know you’ve been with someone for a long time. You do have to legit work on it. There was a point where I had to be like ‘oh, we need to start going on dates again, we need to start doing X. Y. And Z’. And then when you have like a career, and so I have a day job and then I do this and we have friends, and to find time to make sure you’re actually making time for sex is pretty big. But luckily if you’re having a good time with your partner, there’s still plenty of room to have sex. I have someone asked me ‘what the cure for awkward sex is?’ And I was like, ‘the cure is there is no such thing like as long as you’re having a good time the other person’. Having a good time, you’re gonna queef, you’re gonna fart, you’re gonna have, limbs are gonna be moving body parts of moving ways that you don’t want them to because that’s what we’ve seen like in porn and stuff. But if you’re having a great time, that’s all that matters!

Absolutely! This is going to be an amazing show. What can you tell us about the upcoming Firehouse show?
I am so excited for the Firehouse show! We’ve been to Richmond before, but it’s been a while, and this will be our first time at Firehouse. You’re going to have an absolute blast! You’ll laugh, you’ll squirm a bit, and you’ll feel better about your own sex life. Plus, like at many shows, you might even want to share your own sex stories with us after the show – which is always fun to hear. We can’t wait!

Don’t miss out on the ever-evolving topic of sex – catch Natalie Wall at the Firehouse Theatre this Thursday for “Awkward Sex in the City.” Get your tickets now at the Firehouse Theatre.
