Halloweek 2014 – a week’s worth of RVA’s best Halloween parties

by | Oct 16, 2014 | COMMUNITY

Edgar Allan Poe. The ghosts of Confederate soldiers. The collapsed train tunnel beneath Church Hill. The Hollywood Cemetery vampire. Richmond has been a haunted town for centuries, going all the way back to the curse Chief Powhatan cast upon the area in the 17th century. In light of the city’s supernatural history, confining our Halloween celebrations to just one night never seemed like the way to go. This is why, nine years ago, RVA Magazine created the week long celebration of this uncanny holiday known as Halloweek.

And now, RVA Magazine is happy to announce Halloweek 2014!! Starting October 24th, our weeklong program of Halloween oriented happenings around RVA will fill eight nights with thrilling events!

As usual, we’ll have huge dance parties, the zombie walk, and other Halloween-themed evenings, complete with all the haunted festivities that make this time of year one of RVA’s favorite holidays.

Halloweek has always been unique in its ability to inspire and share widely resonating content relevant to Halloween fun in Richmond. Using RVA Magazine’s social media network, Halloweek reached over 2 million people in 2013.

Brother Ali at Broadberry

I’ve lived and loved the culture of Hip Hop since I was in grade school, 1985. I used to study and memorize the greats like Melle Mel, Slick Rick and Whoodini. When KRS-One, Rakim, and Public Enemy came out in the late 80’s it blew my mind. I started writing and recording my own songs in Jr. High. By High School I was battling in cyphers everywhere I went and rockin’ school dances.

I met the Rhymesayers crew in the late 90’s and learned the next level of DIY music. Ant and I started working together in ’02. We made Shadows On The Sun and I started touring in support of Atmosphere (my label-mates and big brothers).

We toured constantly for the next few years with comrades like Brand Nubian, Immortal Technique and Rakim. The Champion EP dropped in 04 and we kept it moving.

Movie Club presents Halloween III: Season Of The Witch at Hardywood

Movie Club Richmond and Hardywood Park Craft Brewery celebrate the Halloween season with a free screening of Halloween III: Season of the Witch, taking place Sunday, October 26, 2014 at 6:00 pm at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery (2408 Ownby Lane, Richmond, Virginia). This showing will mark the latest installment of Movie Club Richmond, a new repertory series that presents classic films and cult favorites in monthly screenings at locations such as Hardywood and Strange Matter.

Written and directed by Tommy Lee Wallace (It, Fright Night: Part II), Halloween III: Season of the Witch was originally released in 1982 as the third entry in the popular horror series that began with John Carpenter’s 1978 film, Halloween. Its stars include character actors Tom Atkins (The Fog, Lethal Weapon) and Dan O’Herlihy (Robocop, Twin Peaks). Atkins plays a doctor whose investigation of a murder brings him into conflict with a toymaker (O’Herlihy) with plans to exploit the gross commercialization of Halloween. The film features an eerie score by Carpenter, who also provided music for Halloween, The Fog and The Thing.

Halloween III: Season of the Witch is the first and only film in the Halloween series not to feature the serial killer character of Michael Meyers, trading his presence for a sci-fi mystery story reminiscent of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Although its creators always intended the series to function as a Twilight Zone-style anthology, audiences balked at Meyers’s absence in Halloween III and later demanded his return. Critics similarly misunderstood the film’s intentions, with Roger Ebert labeling it “a low-rent thriller from the first frame.”

However, in intervening decades, Halloween III: Season of the Witch has proven itself ripe for reappraisal. A passionate fan base has built up around the film, celebrating its moody atmospherics, ingenious plotting and terrific performances by Atkins and O’Herlihy. Fans and academics alike have lauded the film’s wry critique of 1980s consumerism. Halloween III has been the subject of restorations by Shout! Factory and Anchor Bay Entertainment, and is a perennial favorite at Richmond’s own Video Fan. And yet today it still remains largely unknown. For that reason, it’s our pleasure to reintroduce this overlooked Halloween classic to a new Richmond audience.

Sponsors for this showing include MOVIE CLUB Richmond, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery, Video Fan, Chop Suey Books and Makeout Creek Books. The screening will take place inside the brewery. The Slideways food truck will be on hand, and the bar will be selling drinks for those of legal age. Again, admission is free.

” their sound still maintains the distinguishable chaos that a genre such as “post-apocalyptic-tropical” can promise, yet it makes more sense, a chaotic descent”

Soulpower presents Osaka Monaurail at Strange Matter

We’ve brought you quite a few great shows over the years, but this one easily tops them all. For more than 20 years, Japan’s mighty Osaka Monaurail have dedicated their work to keeping alive the sound and Soul of James Brown. After more than a dozen albums and singles, hundreds of shows on four continents and collaborations with Brown alumni Fred Wesley and Marva Whitney, Osaka Monaurail sound more like James Brown than James Brown did in his best years.
Japan’s premiere funk orchestra has grown from a university combo in the early 1990s to one of the world’s leading groups in the genre. Nine musicians on stage in sharp uniforms inspired by 60s fashion; trumpets are spinning in the air; leader Ryo Nakata dances the Mashed Potato ; the show is an explosive mix of James Brown’s funky dancers and Funk classics of the era.
Soulpower’s DJ Pari has toured with these gentlemen from Tokyo in Europe and Japan. He sums it up this way: “If you never got over the fact that you never got to see James Brown’s Funk revenue of 1968-1973, this is as close as you’ll ever get!”
The Soulpower DJ team will be spinning hot wax before and after the show. And all this for just $10 at the door – how can you pass on this?
Let’s give Osaka Monaurail a warm RVA welcome!

GOURD OF THUNDER IMPERIAL PUMPKIN PORTER

Gourd of Thunder is a dark and gnarly Imperial Pumpkin Porter brewed with freshly picked local pumpkins that were ripened on the vine while continuously listening to heavy metal. The malty pumpkin backbone fuses robustly with a milky sugar creaminess. Bourbon vanilla beans lay down a rock-steady foundation that drives the cinnamon, ginger and clove spices through your skull. This brew does not merely mimic the flavor of a mortal pumpkin pie. Gourd of Thunder will cataclysmically blow your mind with its face-melting, high-voltage attitude. Headbangers Unite!
