The Washington Wizards will pack their bags and head down to Richmond for their part of their official fall training camp this year.

The Washington Wizards will pack their bags and head down to Richmond for their part of their official fall training camp this year. Virginia Commonwealth University’s Siegel Center near the Monroe Park campus will play host to the NBA team.

This isn’t the first time the Wizards have called Richmond their home away from home. The Wizards’ training camp was here in Richmond for six consecutive training years from 2003-09. It has been held at George Mason, the Verizon Center and Towson in subsequent years.

The training camp was announced on Monday and is set as a one-year deal according to a release from VCU. However, the school will “certainly be open to discussions about future years if they’re interested,” said VCU deputy director of athletics Jon Palumbo in an interview with Richmond Times Dispatch.

The team will have a total of six training days, according to the schedule they released. On Friday, September 30, the team will be holding their annual open practice from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on the event level of the Verizon Center.

This practice is open to all media and fans, however the rest of the scheduled practices will be closed.

The Wizards recently brought on a new head coach, Scott Brooks, for a 5-year deal worth a total of $35 million dollars. According to ESPN, Brooks posted a record of 338-207 with the Oklahoma City Thunder and made a trip to the 2012 NBA Finals among his five playoff appearances.

The Wizards will kick off their pre-season on October 4 at 7:00 p.m. against Miami Heat in their hometown. The regular season will open Thursday, October 27th at 7:30 p.m. in an away game in Atlanta, Georgia against Atlanta Hawks.
