Amid all of the holiday shopping, decorating and family gatherings, we can forget to stay in the holiday spirit. Stony Point Fashion Park is hoping to “break the ice” and get us back into the spirit with the grand opening of their new outdoor ice skating rink this weekend.
In previous years, the outdoor mall had a small 28 by 40 foot rink during the holiday season, but the new one opening this Saturday, is a 2,500 square foot rink located in Triangle Park between Saks Fifth Avenue and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
Karen Smith, Marketing Director for Stony Point Fashion Park said construction on the rink area began in July as part of a $50 million redevelopment effort for the shopping mall which was announced by Starwood Retail Partners, owner of the mall, last fall.
“This is a unique experience, the only real ice rink in the city of Richmond,” said Smith. “This, along with our new seating (some is heated seating), fire tables, stage, kids’ play area and dog park are all amenities the public will now be able to enjoy as a compliment to the shopping experience at Stony Point.”
The rink will be open until Mon. Jan. 16 and provide 300 skating sessions to the public. A performance by the James River Ice Theatre and an appearance by Mayor Jones will be part of the opening weekend celebration.
Coinciding with the grand opening of the ice skating rink, Stony Point will also host its annual Community tree lighting from 5 to 7 pm on Saturday.
There will be live music from the Kings of Swing, giveaways for kids 10 & under, characters from Richmond Ballet’s The Nutcracker, complimentary holiday balloon creations and strolling Dickens themed carolers. Snow will fall as the shopping mall light’s the 42’ animated tree.
And get there early because the first 250 skaters will receive a free s’mores kit.
Regular admission is $7 for skating, $7 for skate rental and guests are welcome to wear their own skates. Unlimited skating all season costs $199 per skater and includes skate rental. The rink will host Cheap Skate Mondays with $2 from noon – 6 pm and disco nights on Thursdays.
Stony Point Fashion Park’s Stony Point On Ice will open this Saturday, Nov. 12 from 6 to 9 pm. Hours for the outdoor rink will vary throughout the season please check the website here for more details.
