The Hoody Weather Origin Story and Talking About Spirit Animals

Richmond based DJ Hoody Weather has been turning up clubs and bars here in RVA since late last year. He’s know for sick beats and keeping the night going hard, so much so we named him one of our Party Kings earlier this Spring. You can catch him Friday night at Strange Matter for Maximum Capacity.

We have to ask, where did your name Hoody Weather come from?

I was baptized Hoody Weather by my homie Kool Kev from Luggage. We used to party at our friend Thomas’s house, and I’d hop on the computer and DJ off of YouTube. One night Kev joked like “oh what’s your DJ name…DJ Hoody Weather!?”, it was in October, around the time you start wearing your hoodies again. When I made my DJ debut a bit later, that’s what I ran with. Thanks Kev!

What’s your spirit animal?

My spirit animal is definitely the party wolf! Featured prominently in a lot of my flyers.

Are you a natural at throwing parties?

I wouldn’t say that I am. I’m naturally outgoing, and I like to party, and make sure everyone else is having a good time as well. I guess those characteristics work well together. I’ve never thought about it actually. I was shocked anyone came to my first party at Helen’s last year honestly.

What does the most fun night of your life look like?

Wow. It looked like me being on tour with Myke Terry & Bury Your Dead in 2009. We played a show called Band Camp in Madison, WI. The radio station in charge put us up in a nice ass hotel. Just imagine a bunch of rock dudes, a bunch of hot chicks, & tons of booze. I need to plead the fifth now though.

You get stranded on a desert island with any five people in the world…

Myke Terry. Myke Terry. Myke Terry. Scarlett Johansson. Trill Bill.

For people who want to get you a drink at Maximum Capacity this Friday, what should they get you?

I actually stopped drinking while DJing. Shockingly, this has led to me playing better. Weird, right? I’ll have a beer or two over the course of a few hours though. I like ciders & whiskey. The minute I’m done playing I will take all of the Jameson shots.

Top 5 all time favorite bangers?

Aw man! Tough choice….

“Burn The Block (Gent & Jawns Remix)” by Bro Safari & UFO
“Hands On The Wheel” by ScHoolboy Q
“m.A.A.d City” by Kendrick Lamar

This is a tough question. I can only think back to the last shit I played…

“Boneless” by Steve Aoki, Chris Lake, & Tujamo
“Party Up” by DMX

Favorite moment being a DJ so far…?

All time favorite moment was looking out at the crowd at the Hangar 18 show and seeing how much fun everyone was having. I had the biggest smile. Also, lemme add whenever someone tells me they like what I’m playing, says thanks, daps me up, or gives me five while I’m spinning. That’s the good stuff.
