‘We Live in Fear’ Spouse of FBI Agent Speaks Out

by | Feb 6, 2025 | LETTER TO THE EDITOR, NEWS, POLITICS, VIRGINIA NEWS

In the wake of escalating political tensions, a new controversy has emerged over the safety and security of FBI agents involved in the January 6th Capitol insurrection investigations. According to multiple news reports, the Justice Department, under the current administration, has received detailed information about over 5,000 FBI employees who participated in these investigations. This includes employee ID numbers, job titles, and specific roles, sparking concerns about political retaliation and personal risks for law enforcement officers and their families.

While the administration has yet to fully explain the reasoning behind this disclosure, critics argue that it undermines the principle of nonpartisan law enforcement and exposes public servants to unnecessary danger. Several FBI agents have responded with legal action, filing lawsuits against the Justice Department. They claim the release of their information leaves them vulnerable to harassment, intimidation, and potential violence, both at work and in their personal lives.

To highlight the personal impact of these developments, we have received a letter from a Richmond area resident identifying as the spouse of an FBI agent. We have chosen to publish the letter in full.

To All Media Outlets,

Subject: The Unspoken Threat of the FBI Purge and Exposure of Agents & Families

To the Journalistic Community,

I am writing to bring attention to a deeply concerning issue that is not being fully addressed: the current administration’s efforts to purge and expose FBI agents, particularly those who played any role in investigating the January 6th insurrection. While there has been some reporting on the political implications, little has been said about the devastating personal impact on these agents and, more importantly, their families.

The decision to publicly name and punish these professionals does not only put their lives at risk but also endangers their spouses, children, and loved ones. This exposure does not stop at the agents—it follows them home. It places a target on their backs, invites harassment, and fosters an environment where threats, retribution, and intimidation become inevitable. This is not just a career consequence; it is a direct assault on their safety and way of life.

The fear we now live with is profound. The loss of anonymity has placed us in the crosshairs of political extremism, making even the most basic aspects of daily life—going to work, sending our children to school, interacting in our own communities—fraught with risk. Many of us now fear not just for ourselves, but for our families, as the ripple effect of this exposure extends far beyond our own actions. Employers may retaliate, teachers and fellow students may ridicule, and our sense of security has been stripped away.

Why is there no one fighting for us? Why is there not an attorney, a law firm, or an advocacy group standing up to say this is wrong? If such a resource exists, where is it, and how do we find it? If none exists, why not? Those who have dedicated their careers to upholding the law are now being left vulnerable, with no legal or institutional support to protect them.

This is a moment where journalism must step up—not just to report on what is happening, but to shine a light on the human cost of these actions. This is not just a bureaucratic shake-up; it is a reckless act that threatens families, livelihoods, and the very principle that law enforcement should be free from political persecution.

Please, help tell this story. Please, help us find the resources we so desperately need.

Sincerely,
FBI wife
