Reel Support! Tuesday Movie Nights at The Byrd Theatre with RVA Mag

by | Apr 10, 2024 | COMMUNITY NEWS, DOWNTOWN RVA, FILM & TV, NIGHTLIFE, POP CULTURE

Does having drinks while watching classic moves in one of the country’s last remaining Grand Movie Palaces sound like a perfect Tuesday night? Rhetorical question — IT IS. This is why we’re thrilled to announce a new movie night to help fundraise for the preservation of the Byrd Theatre in Carytown.

For the next three months, we’ll be hosting a monthly movie night with all proceeds going directly to the theatre’s upkeep and restoration, including replacing seats that were originally installed in 1928. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the following classics on the big screen.

For those unfamiliar with the Byrd, the theatre is more than just a state / national historic landmark; it is one of the last surviving Grand Movie Palaces in the US, built between 1910 – 1940s. At 94 years old, the theatre has remained largely unchanged, and is a testament to the architectural pomp of cinema’s golden age, complete with nightly performances on the mighty Wurlitzer pipe organ. Put into context, the first movie premier at the Byrd was a silent feature called Waterfront, on Christmas Eve in 1928, for just 25 cents.

Why do we think this is important?

Because in an age of endless streaming and lackluster “content,” experiencing films in a historic cinema allows for a shared, collective experience — something which can never be replicated on a phone or tablet. Coming together to watch films as a community is foundational; laughing, crying, and observing the artistry and nuance of our favorite movies creates an energy that transcends genre or generation. Movies also act as a life diary, connecting us to moments of personal discovery and inspiration, creating a common dialogue that enriches the social and cultural fabric of our lives in the process.

All of which is a long way of saying, watching a film at the Byrd is a special experience worth continuing — especially as Richmond changes.

We hope you will join in our support of the Byrd by enjoying classic movies with us — every ticket goes directly to the theatre’s preservation. And if you share our passion for cinema, please consider making a direct donation here. Your support makes all the difference.
