It’s always good to see what develops when members of punk rock bands start growing out their hair. VA Beach’s Turnover were already onto something with their 2013 album Magnolia, which leavened their early pop-punk leanings with a softer, more melancholy aspect. Now they’re preparing to release their follow-up, Peripheral Vision, and the songs they’re releasing to give everyone an advance taste of that album show significant further artistic development. And when I watch this video, I can’t help but give at least a little bit of credit to their guitarist and bassist’s lovely flowing manes.
I mean, let’s be honest–those slow-motion headbangs are incredibly satisfying to watch. Almost as satisfying as the excellent slight key change that accompanies the shift from “New Scream”‘s verse into its gorgeous chorus. It seems like the guitars should crunch a bit on said chorus, but that’s old hat for Turnover these days, and fortunately they’ve got the melodic chops to make this entire song work without a single distortion pedal anywhere in sight. It’d be easy to compare the sound they achieve here on “New Scream” to recent work by post-hardcore bands like Citizen, Title Fight, or even Pianos Become The Teeth, but personally, I find myself more quickly thinking of early 90s alternative rock bands like House Of Love or The Ocean Blue–this song would fit so nicely on a mix right after “Between Something And Nothing,” and I can’t think of a much higher compliment than that.
