Richmond sludge/doom-metal gods Windhand are back with their third album, Grief’s Infernal Flower, and the first video from the record has dropped.

“Crypt Key” got announced via NPR’s All Songs Considered, and their critic rightfully commented on the band’s successful sound as “gargantuan doom-metal smoked in moody grunge”:

Grief’s Infernal Flower digs the soulful and harrowing vocalist Dorthia Cottrell out of the mix while richly heightening the loud-as-hell-but-smooth-as-butter riffs. Ryan Wolfe’s drums have never sounded so round and pronounced, given that extra oomph from producer Jack Endino (High On Fire, Soundgarden, Nirvana).

NPR got a comment on the making of the “Crypt Key” video as well, with Director Jordan Vance saying it was “compiled clips of archived film that I thought looked like what I was hearing.”

All that footage was double-exposed with live footage of the band Vance had shot in the past. It looks great, so kudos to all involved.

Windhand has been getting love from all over the place, but lets hope the don’t forget their roots here in RVA. Make sure they know we love them by checking out their show at Strange Matter on 9/18.

You can also preorder the new album here via Relapse Records here.
