Sound of Music Recording Studios has been a staple studio in Richmond for a long time.

Sound of Music Recording Studios has been a staple studio in Richmond for a long time.

In the 90’s they recorded a lot of big records for bands like Sparklehorse, Camper Van Beethoven (which was Cracker’s former band) and Carbon Leaf to name a few.

Today, they are still recording for tons of bands in several genres: Indie Rock, Punk, Folk, Americana, and Metal.

The studio is located at 1515 W. Broad St. right off Lombardy and has only been in that spot for just over a year. They do a lot of live recorded events and live albums.

Chrissie Griffith is the full-time booker for the studio and also plays bass and sings for the bands Lady God and Fear of Music (a Talking Heads cover band). Griffith and Richmond vintage guru Kerensa Davenport have put together ‘Bring the Spring’ event which will be held this Saturday March 21st from noon to four at the studios.

Davenport has her own Etsy store and does a lot of markets around the city like the Well Worn Market and events for Gallery5.

This will be a market of local vintage businesses selling their goods with three live musical acts and food from ZZQ serving vegetarian and meat barbecue.

One of the main goals of this event is to benefit Girls Rock! RVA, a non-profit organization for girls (non-gender conforming) to collaborate in a creative and positive environment.

They run a free week-long music workshop every summer and work with the Richmond Public Library doing free workshops and events all year long.

“We will be running a raffle to support Girls Rock! RVA. This is going to be one of two events coming up at the studio where we’re going to try to raise some money for them,” said Griffith. “[Being a musician] I really like what they’re doing and want to take part in any way I can.”

The event will also help get the word out for the small businesses and vendors participating in the event.

Local vintage shops Blue Bones Vintage and Addison Handmade Vintage and several Etsy and local record, art, and home good sellers: Ultra Violet Vintage , Grid+Love, The Creativist, and many more.

“It’s not going to be just vintage clothing, [there will be] a lot of handmade kind of stuff too,” said Griffith. “There’s a leather worker, there’s someone that makes sound objects, mosaics. There should be something for everybody there.”

This will also be a live recorded event of the three musical acts performing.

“Ward Harrison is going to do a solo set, Red Lewis & the Letting Go are going to do the tattooed Americana kind of thing, and Patrick Bates does a really nice folky pop set,” said Griffith.

This will be a fun mix of shopping, live music, and food to commemorate the first day of spring. If the weather is nice the doors of the studio will be open to let in the fresh spring air.

The event is free to the public.

Saturday March 21st from 12-4pm at the Sound of Music Recording Studios, 1515 W. Broad St.
