The Richmond Kickers, RVA’s USL PRO soccer team, play their season opener this weekend, and we’ve got five reasons why you should get off your ass and go catch some world-class soccer action.

1. The Kickers just released a beer!

According to Black and Red United, Wild Wolf Brewery and the Richmond Kickers “launched Kick it Hunny” this Monday, “a new beer that is based on of Wild Wolf’s flagship Blonde Hunny.” The beer is a “Belgian Pale Ale, initially both sweet and malty and ending with a hoppier finish.”

The sports + beer equation generally = a good time, and what sports fan doesn’t love a specialized product? The limited edition brews will be available at Kickers games, so you can rep hard while you watch!

2. It’s gonna be awesome out.

It looks like Mother Nature has finally decided to stop being a raging bitch, and what better way to celebrate the coming of spring (knock on wood) than attending a good old-fashioned soccer match?

According to NOAA, we’re looking at sunny blue skies on Saturday with a high near 73.

Best part is you don’t have to exercise or do anything, but you’ll still get that feeling of accomplishment from being outdoors.

3. It’s cheap!

You can buy four tickets that will get you into any home game for $36, or one ticket for $12 (kids are $7).

If you have children, a Kickers game is a great way to spend time with your family/get your kids to expend some of their incomprehensible amounts of energy.

If you’re single, grab a hottie and take him/her on a date to the game. How creative! Who needs dinner and a movie when you can go watch soccer for a couple hours?

4. Watching sports is good for you

I’m serious! Everyone knows that all sports come complete with their own lexicons, so when you’re watching and listening to the announcers, you’re actually activating parts of your brain that you don’t use all the time. According to Bleacher Report, “those with experience, either playing or watching [sports], are actually calling on additional neural networks in their brains to help their normal language comprehension abilities.”

Are you more of a brawn over brains person? OK, fine, well, apparently watching sports can make you fitter. This is from Discovery News:

A study “published in the international journal Frontiers in Autonomic Neuroscience showed that when watching a first person video of someone else running, heart rate, respiration, skin blood flow and sweat release all increased.”

And that’s only a video! Being there is probably even better, what with all that adrenaline and yelling. Watching sports is bringing sexy back, so go out to a Kickers game and get fit.

5. Soccer rules.

Seeing somebody score a goal is freaking awesome. Seeing people headbutt balls so hard they fall down is freaking awesome. Seeing people collide while sprinting is awesome. See the pattern? Watching soccer is super fun. Soccer has more fans worldwide than any other sport, and for good reason. It’s fast-paced and easy to follow, and there really is nothing like seeing someone score a goal and going “GOOOOOOOOAAAAALLLL!!!!”

The Kickers will play the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday April 5 at 5 pm at City Stadium. Check the website for more information and to purchase tickets.
