We’ve put some footwork in and it looks like the newest issue of the controversial French magazine will not be making its way to Richmond.
The new issue features a man in a beard, believed to be Muhammad, shedding a tear and holding a sign reading “je suis Charlie” or “I am Charlie” with “All is forgiven” in french above the prophet’s head.
Calls put into Chop Suey Books, Velocity Comics, Fountain Bookstore, and (sadly) even Barnes & Noble all yielded no results.
Ward Tefft of Chop Suey said magazine distribution had gotten pretty weird in recent years, and usually you have to sign on early to get copies of magazines.
The woman who answered the phone at Fountain Books echoed this statement.
Velocity said they would try and find out more, and we’ll update if they let us know they are getting some.
Those in Europe might have better luck – 3 million copies of the satirical rag have been ordered, but it seems it’ll be hard to get a copy outside of mainland Europe.
One UK distributor bought 2,000 copies of the print piece.
Hebdo usually publishes about 60,000 copies but sells about half of that.
The new issue will be the first since the magazine’s offices were the victim of a brutal terrorist attack which claimed the lives of 12 people – including five cartoonists and the publication’s editor.
The attackers and their accomplices were killed in a standoff with French police in the days following the attacks.
