John Oliver reminds us how glad we are we didn’t build a new Flying Squirrels Stadium in Shockoe Bottom

John Oliver’s amazing HBO news show, Last Week Tonight, spent 20 minutes talking about the dangers of investing city money into sports stadiums on Sunday night, and the entire time I couldn’t help but think of RVA’s close call with a stadium in Shockoe Bottom.

Rememeber the stadium proposed by Mayor Dwight Jones? The one that lead to protests, and public meetings, anti-stadium billboards and even angry letters from celebrities.

Well, the Mayor’s office has been mum on the issue since early this year, so I think we’ve moved on, but it’s fun to hear Oliver talk about how insane it would have been had it gone forward.

And if the Flying Squirrels threaten to leave because of no new construction, let them know they can move to LA like everyone else is threatening to.
