“Congress has forgotten to serve the people they represent.”
— Lisa Vedernikova Khanna
I often ask myself, what is the American Dream? Is it the white picket fence and a two-and-a-half-kid household? Maybe you picture the Statue of Liberty welcoming new arrivals to a land of promise or hear a faint echo of the Constitution’s preamble.
Whatever it looks like to you, the idea of the American Dream has always been more than just a slogan or a postcard vision. The term was popularized during the Great Depression in 1931, as “a dream of a social order in which every man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest of which they are innately capable.” Nearly a century later, that dream looks different to each of us. Sometimes it’s hopeful, but other times it’s like a lingering ghost from a forgotten generation.
My version of the dream is less about upward mobility or material success, but about dignity, security, and the ability to build a life I want in a world that feels increasingly unstable, something I was especially interested in discussing with next-generation Democrat Lisa Vedernikova Khanna , who is running for Virginia’s 1st Congressional District against incumbent Republican Rob Wittman.
At 30, she’s a first-time mother and a professional in tech and media, but more importantly, her campaign is focused on rebuilding the American Dream through policies that support working families, expand access to affordable childcare and healthcare, and strengthen democratic institutions.
And after Democrats stunning victory last Tuesday night this message is resonating loudly throughout Virginia. Watch our full interview below.
