We are going to do something we have never done in our decade of publishing and it is not a decision we have come upon lightly but one that we state with conviction.

RVA Magazine is endorsing Jon Baliles for Mayor of Richmond.

Jon Baliles was born and raised in Richmond, VA. He has served on the Museum District neighborhood association for a decade with a year as its president. He’s also worked in the Mayor’s Office under Doug Wilder in Planning and Development before being elected to City Council.

He has the experience to lead and the understanding of our city that only comes from living here your whole life.

RVA Magazine‘s focus is on culture and no other candidate running for mayor that has shown a commitment to the culture of Richmond like Jon Baliles.

First, he started RiverCityRapids.com as a way of spreading arts and culture information weekly. Then he co-founded the RVA Street Art Festival, along with local artist Ed Trask, as a way of showcasing and celebrating Richmond artists.

He has shown that the arts play an important role as part of Richmond’s broader community.

On top of that, he has championed efforts to improve food access to all city residents, made preservation of the James River a priority and narrowed his focus on Richmond Public Schools while also championing transparency and openness and getting our financial house in order.

Jon brings an outsider’s mentality to City Hall but has the insider knowledge to make Richmond work for everyone. He has put in the time to understand the issues our city faces and has done his best to represent the people as shown by his voting record while serving in City Hall. His priorities and his body of work represents a vision for Richmond that RVA Magazine is proud to endorse for Mayor of Richmond, VA.
