Founded in 2005, RVA Magazine will celebrate its 10th year of publication in 2015. It feels good to write that and know our magazine has a place in the history of this community. From our humble beginnings in a row house on Floyd Avenue to our current offices overlooking Monument, it has been a special adventure that has took many twists and turns to get us to this point.
Over the years, we have spotlighted the amazing progress of Richmond’s culture and the creative people that are making it happen. We’ve watched the term “RVA” become ubiquitous within Richmond and develop a still-growing reputation outside the city. We’ve also stayed busy, publishing over 80 issues in the past 10 years, as well as building a dynamic and constantly updated website that drew nearly 2 million visitors in 2014. We believe in our town, and it looks like you believe in us too.
As a company we have not only talked about the movement but been a part of it as well. With our work on First Friday, bringing the Richmond Mural Project to town, taking Richmond’s EDM scene to the next level with RVAlution, turning our favorite holiday of the year into an annual week-long celebration with Halloweek, starting the local New Years Eve celebrations in Carytown back in 2006, and bringing it back better than ever with RVA NYE 2015 on Brown’s Island this year, we have been there with you along the way. Together all of us have made this city special.
We’ll be celebrating our 10th anniversary all year long with special retrospective sections in each of our four regularly scheduled issues. Filled with our favorite stories, art, and photos from past years, along with our usual up-to-the-minute cultural coverage, each issue will have a commissioned cover from an artist who helped us get where we are today: muralist and painter Mickael Broth, skate culture icon James Callahan, collage artist Adam Juresko and graphic novelist Chris Visions. These collectible editions will be the perfect way to commemorate the end of our first decade and the beginning of the next.
