It’s been a few months since the vicious beating of a security guard lead to the closure of the RVA Street Art festival (formerly the Main st. GRTC Bus depot lot) but it looks like it’s gates will be reopening soon.

In a press release sent out this morning, GRTC Public Relations Manager Joan Straszewski said “GRTC is finalizing plans with RVA Street Art Festival LLC and will announce a grand re-opening event where the public will once again be able to tour the grounds and view the many exhibits.”

However, a grand reopening with the folks from the RVA street art festival is in the works, and there are still some conversations that need to take place before the space will actually open.

“It’s now up to the art festival folks as to when it’s going to open,” said Straszewski in a phone interview. “GRTC has given its permission, there are some details that need to get put together – hours and that kind of thing.”

Straszewski said there were many voices asking for the space to reopen, and they wanted to work to make it happen.

“As soon as the festival folks get back with GRTC, (and) we have a grand reopening, it’ll be open on a regular basis.”

While Straszewski couldn’t go into details, she said the violent incident that lead to the closure of the space will open the door to a more detailed security plan.

“Security is a component, there’s no question about that.”
