For the past two years, WRIR Richmond Independent Radio has been conceiving an ambitious project. The intention is to celebrate the rich tapestry of music history that runs rampant through the veins and pulse of every street corner and vintage building in Richmond, VA. On September 29th, A Richmond Music History Tour will bring this dream to the masses. By helping to illustrate the historical value within the local music community, this should be a great way to introduce newcomers and remind longtime residents of some of the fascinating details behind our city’s music scene.
Richmond music historian Greg Kimball will be taking you through the different stops on the music history tour. If you join WRIR for their inaugural tour, you will get to see everything from the “Harlem of the South” days of the Hippodrome, to the heyday of Drag Queens in Carytown. Other stops include a visit to The National to see their inner workings; Tantilla Gardens; the original art and music studios of the infamous GWAR, known only as The Slave Pit; and much more. If you were ever curious about the foundations of the Richmond music scene and the purveyors that helped get it started, this is the perfect opportunity to educate yourself in this department.
The tour begins at 11:30 AM, and again at 2 PM on Saturday, with two buses departing from The Camel (1621 W. Broad Street). The support of To The Bottom and Back and the use of their buses means one thing for sure–occupancy will be limited. It is essential to get your tickets as soon as possible.
