We’re in the south, but not the deep south. Still, we’ve got access to quality fried chicken thanks to places like Lee’s.
We’re in the south, but not the deep south. Still, we’ve got access to quality fried chicken thanks to places like Lee’s.
Now I honestly try and keep my fried chicken consumption to a minimum, but some people can’t get enough of it – and some might go as far as killing for it, or confessing to having killed someone for it.
Jesus Christ this is getting dark… like the delicious dark meat chicken available at Lee’s!
Alright, well, back in 2011, a murder-robbery just before Christmas lead Richmond Police to Jamal Louis Clemons, 27. Once Clemons was in custody, he offered the cops a deal.
In exchange for a meal from Lee’s Fried Chicken, he would confess to the murder.
They agreed and brought the man a meal. Shortly after, he confessed to the double murder.
The Times Dispatch has more grizzly details which seriously ruin the comedic value of this story:
In his confession, Clemons told police he was drunk on “black gin” and had smoked crack before he killed Clapp and Bowmer. He said he wanted to steal money and that he was so eager to get some that he snapped and shot Clapp in the face.
Clemons said he grabbed Bowmer and told him to open a safe. Clemons said Bowmer was trying to open the safe but was having trouble and that Clemons struck him with the gun.
Clemons said his mother had appeared at the home at some point but that he told her to leave and she did. Then he said another woman, a friend of Clapp’s, arrived and came inside the house, leaving her son in the back seat of her car outside.
The woman saw Clapp’s body and begged Clemons not to kill her, too. Clemons said he shot Bowmer twice and that he stopped moving.
Clemons said Bowmer had opened the safe but that nothing was in it.
Authorities said Clemons robbed the surviving woman of her car keys and left in her sport utility vehicle with her 2-years-old son in the back seat. The boy’s mother escaped unharmed.
Police found the boy, also unharmed, more than six hours later in the SUV, which had been abandoned at a nearby cemetery.
Clemons, who begged for the death penalty and quoted the bible saying he deserved to die – “Eye for a eye. Tooth for a tooth. That was in the beginning. Know what I’m saying?” – faces 40 years to life in Jail.
Man, this post started out a lot less brutal. This story should make us realize the poor state of our justice system – only about 5 percent of all felony convictions result from jury trials. The rest are settled by plea bargains – how those arrested are treated during interrogations, and what the hell the seasoning on Lee’s famous chicken is.
Either way, this story reminds us of Wee Bey from the Wire with his confession-for-burgers scene…
