Kick off Halloween at The Byrd Theatre with a charity screening of three “Treehouse of Horror” episodes from the animated sitcom, The Simpsons. The event will raise funds for the Ron “Otto” Matthews Memorial Fund from the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad and happens this Saturday at 1:30pm. All proceeds go to purchasing medical supplies, equipment and training for the volunteer squad.

Ron Matthews, who passed away in 2011, was a former volunteer of the Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad and member of the Tuckahoe Board. The Ron “Otto” Matthews Memorial Fund is a way for his sister, Katherine Mathews, to honor her brother and his commitment to his community.

“It was something that he really loved and it gave him happiness which was very important in his life…. He really cared and it’s [Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad] value to our community,” Matthews said. “I chose The Simpsons because humor was one of my brother’s greatest qualities. He would have wanted something like this to bring the community together; a way to start Halloween off right.”

The three episodes of The Simpsons: 1993- The Devil and Homer Simpson; Terror at 5 1/2 Feet; Bart Simpson’s Dracula, 1994- The Shinning; Time and Punishment; Nightmare Cafeteria, and 1996- Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores; Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace; Homer3 were chosen based on personal favorites with the assistance of family and friends of Matthews.

While planning the screening since July, cities away in Brooklyn, Matthews gathered Carytown Burgers & Fries, Bogart’s in the Fan and Richmond’s Funny Bone Comedy Club and Restaurant as sponsors.

“The most exciting part is just experiencing it, being with friends and family in honor of him and the idea that people will have their children of different ages to see The Simpsons, this being some of the children’s first time seeing them…very exciting,” Matthews said.

Come out this Saturday and join Matthews and the community in the screening of The Simpsons, “Treehouse of Horror” at the Byrd Theatre located in Carytown. Tickets are only available for $7 cash at the door at 1pm Saturday with the screening beginning at 1:30pm.

The Tuckahoe Volunteer Rescue Squad also will have an open house October 12 where free flue shots will be administered from 10am-2pm at 1101 Horsepen Road in Henrico, VA.
