The University of Richmond has released a statement saying the private college is facing a sexual assault charge from the U.S. Department of Education.

Below is text from the release:

The University was recently notified that an individual has filed a complaint against the University of Richmond with the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) of the U.S. Department of Education (“OCR”) relating to a report of sexual misconduct and OCR has opened an investigation of that complaint.

The statement goes on to recognize the recent steps made by the OCR to identify 60 colleges which have come under investigations relating to reports of sexual misconduct.

One Virginia college made the list – University of Virginia.

“We are making this list available in an effort to bring more transparency to our enforcement work and to foster better public awareness of civil rights,” Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Catherine E. Lhamon said when the OCR list was made public. “We hope this increased transparency will spur community dialogue about this important issue. I also want to make it clear that a college or university’s appearance on this list and being the subject of a Title IX investigation in no way indicates at this stage that the college or university is violating or has violated the law.”

U of R identified their statement as steps to cooperate with the OCR.

Additional details about the U of R case were not available by publication.

This announcement comes on the heels of two male James Madison University students who were found guilty of sexual assault but allowed to serve their punishments after they graduated.

Additional details about the JMU charge are below:
