In what is sure to be a defining moment for the near future, the FAA has released six locations to test unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), or Drones, and Virginia Tech made the list.

There have been lots of rumors and theories around the future of drone use in the private and public sector. From drones air dropping tacos, Amazon using drones to deliver packages to your door step, to the most practical and realistic use, farmers using the unmanned vehicles to monitor and maintain crops, the future of drone use in the US is still pretty up in the air, but VA Tech’s work, as well as the work of the 5 other sites around the country, will help us better understand the technology ahead of the FAA’s requirement to solidify private drone use rules in 2015.

Whatever the future of drone use is, RVA Mag is gonna try and keep track of the progress made here in VA, but until then, lets hope it doesn’t turn out like this:
