Three Parts WTF: Weekend Playlist by Say-10 Records

RVA Staff | August 21, 2020

Topics: music, Playlist, richmond va bands, RVA artists, RVA bands, rva magazine weekend playlist, say 10 records, virginia music labels, virginia record labels

Every Friday night, RVA Mag brings you a totally rockin’ playlist curated by Virginia’s most influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This week’s comes to us from Say-10 Records, a Virginia-based label that’s been cranking out excellent releases for over 13 years now. They produce skateboards as well, and while the pandemic has slowed their roll a bit in recent months, they’re still making a lot of great stuff. Recent releases include albums by local groups Toxic Moxie and Xed Out, as well as music from Georgia rock n’ rollers Shehehe, piano-pounding New Jersey showman Will Wood, and a couple of reissues by costumed 90s metal act Green Jelly (who will definitely appeal to the GWAR lovers among you). On top of all that, they’re currently accepting preorders for a skateboard deck featuring Philadelphia Flyers mascot and antifa cult hero Gritty. No, I’m not kidding.

You’ll hear a whole lot of Say-10 music on the playlist put together for us by label head Adam Gecking, plus a lot of other great songs — of all genres. Rest assured, there’s something for everyone to be found here. And we’ll need it, because it looks like the storms are coming back, and we’ll all want some great sounds to get us through them.

Batten down the hatches, Virginia.

Old Devil Moon: Weekend Playlist by Spacebomb House Band

RVA Staff | August 14, 2020

Topics: music, Playlist, rvamag playlist, rvamag weekend playlist, Spacebomb House Band, Spacebomb Records, the best played lands

Every Friday night, RVA Mag brings you a totally rockin’ playlist curated by Virginia’s most influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This time around, we bring you some sweet sounds from the Spacebomb House Band, the loose-knit collective of musicians who give the sounds recorded at Spacebomb Studios their distinctive soulful groove. Led by Pinson Chanselle, Trey Pollard, and Cameron Ralston, the group incorporates a huge cast of talented players. In addition to backing up Spacebomb artists like Matthew E. White, Andy Jenkins, and Natalie Prass, and also creating soundtrack music for the makers of the Serial podcast, they’ve been producing quite a bit of work bearing their own name lately.

Their ninth collection of tracks in an ongoing series of cassette releases known as Library Music, which has been coming out regularly for over two years, dropped last month. IX: The Best Played Lands is a heaping helping of their signature instrumental sounds, and features a ton of great Richmond musicians fleshing out the lineup, including Treesa Gold (Goldrush), Hector “Coco” Barez (Bio Ritmo), JC Kuhl (Agents Of Good Roots), and many more. You definitely want to dig into this one ASAP, and you can check it out by clicking HERE.

But before you head that way, make sure you take a deep dive into this collection of weekend-expanding tracks prepared especially for you by the Spacebomb House Band, who present you with everything from devilish blues to sanctified gospel, along with just about everything in between, in just 31 songs. How can you resist?

Get you some, Virginia.

This week, we’re featuring an encore presentation of a playlist made for us by Deau Eyes, the project of Richmond singer-songwriter Ali Thibodeau. After months of anticipation and buildup, Deau Eyes will be releasing their debut album, Let It Leave, on May 8th. In a preview letting us know what we can expect from the album, Thibodeau joined RVA Magazine’s musical livestream this past weekend to perform the album front to back, solo style. You can check that out here if you missed it.

You’ll be able to check out the final version of Let It Leave just a couple of weeks from now, and get the full experience of Deau Eyes’ charming combo of alternative power-pop and classic American rock.

Strange Love: Weekend Playlist by Mikrowaves

Topics: Edward Prendergast, local music, Mikrowaves, music, Playlist, rva magazine weekend playlist, The Dark Room, Weekend Playlist

Every Friday night, RVA Mag brings you a playlist curated by Virginia’s most influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This week’s installment of this long-running series is brought to us by none other than Mikrowaves, an all-star band featuring a variety of the city’s musical household names coming together for a multi-genre party incorporating blues, Afro-Caribbean sounds, go-go, Latin funk, and much more. The group features musicians from a variety of popular local groups, including Bio Ritmo, The Big Payback, Fear Of Musie. The group is led by Edward Prendergast, who has been making excellent music in quite a few different projects, including The Big East and Amazing Ghost, for over two decades now.

The resulting sound fearlessly leaps and bounds between genres and musical traditions from all around the world, bringing it all together into a potent sonic cocktail you’ll only find right here in Richmond. Much the same can be said about the playlist the group has crafted for us this week, in fact; it’ll take you on a musical trip around the world and keep you dancing all the while. Spice up your weekend with this high-energy soundtrack, then journey to The Dark Room on Saturday, February 8 to see Mikrowaves bring the heat in a live show sure to get you steaming.

Cut loose, Virginia.

Every Friday night, RVA Mag brings you a playlist curated by Virginia’s most influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This week we’re bringing you an encore presentation of a playlist made for us last year by Citrus City Records. We’ve been big fans of this label here at RVA Magazine for quite a while, and they’ve got a lot going on so far this year. From the start of their every-second-Sunday residency at The Camel this very Sunday to their big five-year anniversary show happening at Gallery 5 on Friday, January 24 — two weeks from tonight — you’re sure to hear their name around this city a whole lot as 2020 gets rolling.

Their weekend playlist makes clear exactly why; it perfectly displays the excellent taste of label bosses Manuel Lemus and Rene Franco. From tracks by Citrus City leading lights to classic dance floor bangers, this one is sure to light up your weekend and bring a much-needed warmth to this chilly winter.

Drink your juice, Virginia.

Slow Death: Weekend Playlist by Toward Space

RVA Staff | January 3, 2020

Topics: events in richmond va, events near me this weekend, events richmond va, music, must see shows, Playlist, richmond events, richmond va, richmond va bands, RVA, rva magazine weekend playlist, shows this week richmond, things to do in richmond va, things to do richmond va, Toward Space

Every Friday night, RVA Mag brings you a totally essential playlist from influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This week’s comes to us from the youthful, hyperkinetic Richmond trio known as Toward Space. While it’s been over a year since their LP, Gently With A Chainsaw, graced us all with its rollicking, out-of-control, super-fun dose of garage-punk noise, the band’s been quite active lately, following up the release of their latest video, “Abella,” this fall with a series of US tours, including the upcoming jaunt that will find them trekking through assorted Southern states later this month.

Unfortunately, there does not appear to be a Richmond date for that tour, but while you can’t necessarily see them locally this month, you certainly CAN enjoy the killer playlist they’ve put together for us, full of punk, garage, glam, classic rock, all of which you might predict, and a fair amount of hip hop and country, which might be a little less expected. It all adds up to a great soundtrack for a winter weekend dance party.

Rock with it, Virginia.
