Sounds Like Hallelujah: Weekend Playlist by Muther Goose

RVA Staff | September 27, 2019

Topics: acoustic, Alex Norman, bango, blurgrass, cello, Colette Daley, country, folk, harmonica, Jacob Korona, Jacob Ritter, mandolin, music, muther goose, Playlist, rva magazine playlist, Victor Macmanus, Weekend Playlist

Every Friday night, RVA Mag brings you an essential playlist curated by Virginia’s most influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This week’s comes to us from Muther Goose, a young bluegrass/folk/Americana quintet from Richmond who are just about to release their brand new album, Enough To Go On. In fact, you’ll be able to get it tonight, if you go check them out at their record release show at the Camel, where they’ll be sharing the stage with Dalton Dash and Graham Stone starting at 9 PM tonight. Grab your tickets here.

But first, make sure you give a listen to the treasure trove of goodies that Muther Goose has left us in the form of an excellent Spotify playlist. You’ll get a cornucopia of sounds that has influenced this acoustic quintet, from the predictable yet delightful sounds of Willie Nelson and Bela Fleck to unexpected but always excellent tunes by Karen Dalton and Pink Floyd. It’s a great way to get the most out of a lazy sunny afternoon this weekend. After which you can put on the new Muther Goose album you’ll score tonight at The Camel. Of course.

Get with it, Virginia.

Five Ten Fiftyfold: Weekend Playlist by Hex Machine

RVA Staff | June 21, 2019

Topics: Hex Machine, indie, instrumental, local music, music, Playlist, rock, rva magazine playlist, Weekend Playlist

Every Friday night, RVA Mag brings you an absolutely essential playlist curated by Virginia’s most influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This one comes to us from Hex Machine, the veteran RVA noise-rock act that brought us their excellent debut album, Fixator, back in 2012. Since then, the group has kept a somewhat low profile while singer/guitarist Trevere Thomas and drummer Douglas Andrae spent three years as the rhythm section for legendary experimental metal band Today Is The Day.

However, the duo have returned to full-time action with Hex Machine, and, along with bassist Alex Ricart, unleashed their long-awaited followup LP, Cave Painting, this week. The new album finds the group’s trademark noise chaos leavened by a dose of 80s postpunk, taking their entire sound to the next level. They’ll be kicking off an East Coast tour to support the album with a performance at Wonderland on Wednesday, July 17, and you’re not going to want to miss it.

Until then, you can enjoy this playlist prepared especially for you by the members of Hex Machine. It ranges widely across genres both predictable and totally unexpected — ambient electronic sounds sit shoulder to shoulder with raging punk and cerebral progressive metal.

Immerse yourself, Virginia.

RVA Staff | January 25, 2019

Topics: Big Something, Bluegrass, classic rock, coutnry, indie, rock, rva magazine playlist, Weekend Playlist

Every Friday night, RVA Mag drops a ridiculously amazing playlist curated by influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This week, we receive a potent musical dispatch from Big Something, the North Carolina alt-rock group with strong enough ties to Richmond to have released a live album recorded at The Broadberry. This weekend finds the group returning to The Broadberry for their first-ever two-night stand here in Richmond, which promises to liven up the weekend for the entire town.

But in the meantime, we’ve got a set of incredible music that truly shows off this band’s eclectic tastes and wide-ranging influences. From jazz to hip-hop to the kind of rockin’ they’ve led us to expect, Big Something previews the live performances they’ve got on tap for tonight and tomorrow with what amounts to an excellent DJ set you can jam while you get prepped for the gig.

Check it out, Virginia! And grab your tickets to see Big Something tonight or tomorrow (or both!) at bit.ly/BigSomethingRVA.
