Obsessed By Speed: Weekend Playlist by LOUD NIGHT

RVA Staff | October 16, 2020

Topics: Loud Night, music, richmond va local bands, richmond va loud night, rva magazine weekend playlist, rvamag weekend playlist

Every Friday night, RVA Mag brings you a truly fantabulous playlist curated by Virginia’s most influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This time around, we bring you a raging ripper from Loud Night, a Richmond band bringing together members of Battlemaster and Ramming Speed to make some ferocious, heavy noise. They just released their debut LP, Mindnumbing Pleasure, a few weeks ago through Richmond’s own Vinyl Conflict, and the first press is already sold out, so clearly, a lot of you have already gotten the word on this rip-roaring group.

A second pressing of Mindnumbing Pleasure is in the works, so if you haven’t scored your copy yet, you won’t have long to wait. But in the meantime, get down with a selection of excellent tunes curated for RVA Mag by Loud Night. They’re bringing us a treasure trove of thrashing metal, hardcore punk, D-beat crust, rock n’ roll anthems, and more. With cold temperatures and rain rolling in over the weekend, this will be the perfect mix to soundtrack the harshness of the outside world.

Get grim, Virginia.

Old Devil Moon: Weekend Playlist by Spacebomb House Band

RVA Staff | August 14, 2020

Topics: music, Playlist, rvamag playlist, rvamag weekend playlist, Spacebomb House Band, Spacebomb Records, the best played lands

Every Friday night, RVA Mag brings you a totally rockin’ playlist curated by Virginia’s most influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This time around, we bring you some sweet sounds from the Spacebomb House Band, the loose-knit collective of musicians who give the sounds recorded at Spacebomb Studios their distinctive soulful groove. Led by Pinson Chanselle, Trey Pollard, and Cameron Ralston, the group incorporates a huge cast of talented players. In addition to backing up Spacebomb artists like Matthew E. White, Andy Jenkins, and Natalie Prass, and also creating soundtrack music for the makers of the Serial podcast, they’ve been producing quite a bit of work bearing their own name lately.

Their ninth collection of tracks in an ongoing series of cassette releases known as Library Music, which has been coming out regularly for over two years, dropped last month. IX: The Best Played Lands is a heaping helping of their signature instrumental sounds, and features a ton of great Richmond musicians fleshing out the lineup, including Treesa Gold (Goldrush), Hector “Coco” Barez (Bio Ritmo), JC Kuhl (Agents Of Good Roots), and many more. You definitely want to dig into this one ASAP, and you can check it out by clicking HERE.

But before you head that way, make sure you take a deep dive into this collection of weekend-expanding tracks prepared especially for you by the Spacebomb House Band, who present you with everything from devilish blues to sanctified gospel, along with just about everything in between, in just 31 songs. How can you resist?

Get you some, Virginia.

Southern Nights: Weekend Playlist by Holy Roller

RVA Staff | February 15, 2019

Topics: Bluegrass, country, Holy Roller, rock, rvamag weekend playlist, southern nights

Every single Friday evening, RVA Mag brings you a splendiferously outstanding playlist curated by influential artists, musicians, and institutions.

This week we’re turning the spotlight on Richmond’s own Holy Roller, who’ll be celebrating the release of their self-titled debut album this Saturday night at The Camel. Having previously made somewhat of a name for themselves around town as Big Mama Shakes, they’ve returned with a new name and a slightly redone lineup, but still the same great soulful alt-rock Americana sound.

Their playlist is a treat for the exact same sort of music fan who’s going to love Holy Roller themselves, bringing us some excellent sounds drawing from American traditions like blues, folk, and good ol’ rock n’ roll, while still keeping one foot planted firmly in the 21st century. Groove to this one all day tomorrow, then head to the Camel to celebrate their brand new album — more info on that show here.

Keep it light, Virginia.
