Here’s a video from The Babies, a New York band that formed when Cassie Ramone of the Vivian Girls met Kevin Morby of Woods at a Brooklyn house party. The result of their collaboration was a band that quickly took on momentum of its own and became a going concern independently of Ramone and Morby’s more high-profile bands.
“Baby” is a song from their second album, Our House On The Hill, released last month by Woodsist, and its sun-kissed pop melody and jangly indie guitars are offset by a wistful longing in Ramone’s vocals. The song recalls the same fusion of 90s indie-pop and 60s girl-group harmony that has become Best Coast’s stock-in-trade, and the video’s lo-fi retro-karaoke vibe fits well with that aesthetic.
The Babies are performing tonight at Strange Matter, along with Charlottesville’s The Invisible Hand and local RVA acts The Ar-Kaics and Positive No–the latter of which features former members of Dahlia Seed, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, and Wrist Rocket. Show starts at 9 PM, admission is $10 at the door. For more info, click HERE.
