RVA indie quintet Black Girls just dropped their third album, Claire Sinclaire, on Saturday, celebrating its release with a turned-up live performance at Balliceaux. They also released a video for what appears to be the album’s first single, “Buyin’ Time,” this weekend, so these white guys are keeping busy! The video has a hazy, kaleidoscopic feel that harks back to the late 60s psychedelic era, but “Buyin’ Time” actually has even more of a throwback sound than that; its undistorted guitar riffs and harmonized chorus vocals are almost doo-wop, albeit with a bit of Animal Collective influence thrown in. Drummer Stephen Farris takes the lead vocal for most of the song’s early verses; ostensible lead singer Drew Gillihan really only steps into the spotlight for the song’s lingering coda. Meanwhile, director Matt Petrock lights the entire scene with soft amber, violet, and cerulean tones. The whole thing is like the most peaceful acid trip ever.
As you can see above, Claire Sinclaire is available for purchase in full on Bandcamp right now, as well as from iTunes, and you can stream it at Spotify. And if you didn’t catch Black Girls at their CD release show last Saturday, don’t worry, because they’ll be playing again in less than two weeks! On Saturday, March 22, they’ll be opening for DC indie rockers BRNDA at The Camel (1621 W. Broad St), and admission is only $5. So show up at 10 PM so you can be sure to catch both bands, and of course, bring an extra ten-spot so you can pick up a physical copy of Claire Sinclaire on either CD or limited edition cassette.
