Here’s a video from a new Richmond trio formed by two brothers, Chris and Chip Cosby. Previously making music separately–Chip in the Richmond emo-pop group Adara, Chris as a solo artist–they’ve recently combined their efforts, and have a debut album, In Flight, scheduled for release this month. The group, which is rounded out by drummer Josh Santamaria (himself no stranger to playing music with his brothers), just released their first video this week, for a song taken from In Flight.
“Get It Back” clearly owes a debt to the early 80s, straddling the line between Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet’s new romanticism and the dark balladry of The Cars’ “Drive.” The group’s stripped-down lineup, with Chris’s keyboards standing in for bass, results in a somewhat hollow sound through most of the song, with Chip’s guitar focusing mainly on single-note melody lines. The last minute of the track, when Chip introduces a stronger rhythm guitar riff, really takes things up a notch, and even reminds me a little bit of The Jesus And Mary Chain’s less noisy early 90s work. I would have liked to hear more of this kind of thing from the rest of the song, but “Get It Back” is clearly intended to be a big romantic ballad, and it works on that level.
The video goes well with the song’s romantic theme; director Dave O’Dell manages to communicate a relatively well-developed narrative through scenes in which a seemingly dysfunctional couple (of which Chris Cosby is the male half) fights, storms off to separately brood, ends up coming back together, and rides off into the sunset on the back of a motorcycle. Interspersed with these shots are scenes of the band, wearing black suits and sunglasses, performing in a dimly-lit room as lasers and multi-colored lights wash over them. The overall effect reminds me of the early Killers, just a bit, with some elements of the movie Drive mixed in there (maybe I’m crazy, but I even see a little bit of resemblance between the Cosby brothers and Ryan Gosling).
If In Flight isn’t officially out now, it should be soon, and though we don’t have a link from which to order it as of right now, you should definitely keep an eye on Cosby’s facebook page for more info. For now, enjoy the video!
