The third installment of the Direct to Video series happens this Friday afternoon with a screening at the Byrd Theatre of short films by multi-discipline artists and non artists.
“The Direct to Video group show was born out of a lack of outlets for non-filmmaker work,” says Dylan Languell, the event’s curator and organizer. These screenings aim to give an audience to those experimenting with the film medium. This week’s event features 16 films, including works by Daniel Beckwith, Wolfgang Daniel, and Maxwell Paparella.
“[We want] to elicit dialogues between artists exploring different mediums, challenge spectatorship by breaking quotidian routines, and create a large community of artists,” Languell explains. “The choice of spotlighting these works in a theatre setting is a [throw]back to Art House [tradition].”
“Mare,” a short film by local-musician-turned-filmmaker Wolfgang Daniel, is one example of the art viewers can expect this Friday. The artist describes his work as “a narrative film about the connection between film spectatorship and dreams [that] uses color, mood, and sound to create a piece about two people who become the film they are watching.”
According to Languell, Direct to Video’s previous events have been well-received by the community. He says, “Richmond’s community has shown out in great numbers, [both] within the submission process and [in] attendance.” Not a film expert? No problem! Languell says the films span an “immense scope” of interests, from art to technology and beyond.
The screening happens this Friday at The Byrd Theatre, with doors opening at 1:30 pm, and is free and open to the public. The after party is at 9 pm at Strange Matter, and will feature performances by Brian Morsburger, Contortionist Jazz Exotica, Caves and Caverns, Afterhours, MC NASDAQ, and Diamond Black Hearted Boy–all of whom have had films shown in current or past editions of Direct To Video.
