Dream Atlantic, “Shred This City”

Here’s a new video from local metalcore group Dream Atlantic, whose new album, Legacy, was released today. “Shred This City,” the first single, has the sort of title that conjures images of typical abstract yet positive/triumphant metalcore subject matter, and the song’s transitions between powerful verses and more melodic choruses, complete with clean vocals, strengthen the impression.

However, once you pay a little closer to the lyrics, the impression is disrupted a bit due to the fact that this song is really about a crazy drunken bender. With lines like “Shot after shot after shot–we’re just getting started,” and “who says last call ends the night?” these guys are celebrating some crazy debauchery that actually fits well with the chugging riffs, which at times owe an obvious debt to local legends Lamb Of God. However, there’s no crime in a young Richmond band taking inspiration from one of this city’s greatest exports, and the addition of upbeat Every Time I Die-style rock n’ roll riffs and a couple of truly pummeling breakdowns keeps this song from sounding like any sort of copycat.

The video for “Shred This City” is pretty entertaining, even though it mainly focuses on shots of Dream Atlantic performing the song in an empty room. These guys go nuts when they play if this video’s any indication, with singer Anthony Williams in particular displaying a maniacal energy. Mixed in with clips of the exact sort of drunken shenanigans the lyrics describe–pounding shots, acting like fools in the back of their tour van (which I hope they’re not planning on driving anytime soon), skateboarding and playing tackle football in an empty parking lot… these scenes bring the song’s subject matter to life, and make clear exactly why a bartender might get tired enough of these insane drunks to boot them long before last call. Not that that would stop them.

Legacy is available starting today from iTunes, as well as in CD format directly from the band. We haven’t heard about any upcoming shows by Dream Atlantic where you’ll be able to score a copy, but you can grab the album from iTunes HERE, and you can keep up with Dream Atlantic’s upcoming live performance schedule by following them on facebook or ReverbNation.
