HBO’s epic Game of Thrones is sure to please fans with its feudalism, fantasy, and elaborate sex scenes as it returns for its fourth season this April. If the recently released screencaps and teaser trailers weren’t enough, HBO has just released a 15-minute behind the scenes promo feature, complete with cast interviews and behind the scenes footage.
Season 4, subtitled Ice and Fire, will have much of the same core cast, but with a few new characters as well. Time Magazine’s Lily Rothman writes, “Viewers of the show who have also read the books on which they’re based will probably be able to guess who this new character is, but TV-only Westeros devotees have some surprises ahead.”
In the latest feature, we are introduced to Oberyn Martell, played by Pedro Pascal. Oberyn is described in the preview as the “wild card.” He uses his invitation to the royal wedding as an opportunity to enact his plans of revenge. His story will be directly entwined with that of the Lannister family from previous seasons.
Also in the promo, returning cast members Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister) and Kit Harington (Jon Snow) explain how their characters will develop in the shows 4th season. In particular, Emilia Clarke talks about how her character, Daenerys Targaryen, “explores what kind of a leader she can be.” Daenerys is losing control of her dragons, and Clark says “Its kind of a symbol of her losing control of herself.”
Expect the fourth season of Game of Thrones to be even more ambitious than the last. Executive producer and writer D.B. Weiss says, “There is definitely objectively more action… there are a whole lot of things on the production front that we’ve never done before.” Ice and Fire seems to be aiming towards keeping the action steady and intense, while staying true to the source material.
