Here’s a brand new Hoax Hunters live video recorded with a really nice four-camera setup at the band’s LP release show last month at Gallery 5. The video was directed by Craig Zirpolo of The Horn RVA, who does a lot of filmed documentation of the RVA scene on the website he edits. While normally I try to avoid, um, horning in on Craig’s territory, this one’s been released by the band as an official promotional video, so I feel like I’m safe.
Anyway, PJ Sykes and crew dish out their usual wall of angry, noisy rock n’ roll on this version of Comfort & Safety‘s penultimate track, beginning with a long ambient feedback passage that cranks the tension up to a much higher level than usual. Hoax Hunters are joined onstage for this performance by Dave Watkins, who also appeared on the album version of this song playing his homemade hybrid of a dulcimer and a guitar, which he calls a dulcitar. Once things kick in, Watkins’s contributions add an additional layer of chaos to a song that’s already pretty intense and crazy to begin with. Despite a less than perfect sound mix on the clip (really wish I could hear the guitars better), the harsh, dissonant chords of the chorus hit hard, especially when combined with Sykes’s powerful bellowing. Things reach a fever pitch on the song’s lengthy coda, and the feedback-laced amplifier damage that ends the video makes it very clear why this was the last song of Hoax Hunters’ set that night.

If you still don’t have Comfort & Safety, I’m not sure what you’re waiting for, but it’s still available on blue or black vinyl from Negative Fun Records for only $12 (click here to order) or as a digital download from Cherub Records for $9.99 (grab it from the label’s Bandcamp by clicking here). And be sure to head over to Bandito’s on Sunday, September 28 at 10 PM to catch a free show from Hoax Hunters and The Awesome Few. For more info on that show, click here.
