Be careful if you’re headed down to Monroe Park today, because there are apparently some hooligans who take no shit hanging out over there. Or maybe it’s just Johnny Ciggs, Skweeky Watahfawls, and the Gritty City crew, as seen in their latest video, “Kick ‘Em.” The BCMusic1st-directed clip is the first single from Ciggs & Watahfawls collaborative mixtape with producer Fan Ran, See Us On The Dancefloor, which has the sort of jazzy, funky, cinematic sound that all the Gritty City productions lean toward. These dudes are making some of the best hip hop coming out of this city right now, and a lot of it seems to be happening even as they throw wild parties and give no fucks. This video is plentiful visual evidence of the hard-partyin’ Gritty City lifestyle, as Johnny, Skweeky, and their crew hang out smoking cigarettes, drinking beers, and waving assorted sporting tools around. Sometimes they’re in empty parking lots, sometimes they’re hanging out next to graffiti murals, and sometimes they’re in the park (intimidating VCU freshmen, no doubt), but they’re always rapping well and proving they deserve whatever accolades they get–and then some. Keep an eye on the Gritty City crew–they’re making things happen.
